To Shape a Dragon's Breath | Moniquill Blackgoose

This book is a horror story! Well, not literally...but as a Native American reader, this is a horror story... especially with the current political climate.

The prejudice that Anequs faces is INFURIATING. This is a reimagined world, yet the prejudice echoes from my ancestral history...and now the reality we are all facing today.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal Like I recently commented about...I grew up witnessing my mom experience several levels of prejudice. Something she has dealt with all her life.

Personally, I have dealt with racist who are so sly it's scary because the racism is not easily noticable.

Now, my mom and I both are experiencing blunt prejudice every time we step out and about.

AnnCrystal I knew that the prejudice of the past remained alive, just not at these widespread, intense levels. I can now imagine the unjust prejudice returning to the levels described in this book...

This story does well in highlighting the ignorance of racism...but it is still unsettling.

Aside from the racism, I am truly enjoying the story.

AnnCrystal On page 245 of 511. This is chronicling the journey of Anequs and Kasaqua as they venture to Dragon school and enter Anglish society. While I'm finding this entertaining, some may find the storyline tedious because the structure is a bit like a diary of events told from Anequs' prospective.

AnnCrystal There are a nice diversity of characters (brown, black, and white). There is even a disabled professor, and an autistic classmate.

"Don't you find it odious and absurd to make any distinction between immigrant and home-born workers?
In that case you have realised that the old adage about "proletarians having no home land" remains perfectly true and should be borne in mind constantly to ward off the shit of nationalism and racism."

"Haven't you already taken part in pilfering from a distribution factory, ie, a supermarket?
In that case, you have come to understand that individual re-appropriation of goods stolen by the State & the employer class merely feeds the commodity process until it becomes a collective action & leads to total liquidation of the system, however...it is not enough to just repossess goods. One must also repossess the time and space stolen from us all."

Naturally, Snyder‘s 20 rules on tyranny are pertinent & should be read & absorbed by everyone. But I am so grateful I was able to listen to this expanded edition. Snyder goes deep into the Ukraine/Russian War and how central Ukraine has been to history.

I learned so much & I cannot recommend this version enough.

Chrissyreadit adding to my audio tbr Thanks for sharing! #readingispolitical #antifabookclub 4d

Three little tracts to read, plus a flyer for the Anarchist Book Fair on 8 November 25 at The People's History Museum, Manchester.
1: Radical Companionship, on anti-speciesism and how we might relate to animals in ways that respect their lives.
2: What About the Rapists?: Some responses to common criticisms of non-carceral justice systems.
⬇️

Bookwomble 3: Burning Women, examining the witch hunts, land enclosure and the rise of capitalism as joint projects, which evidence strongly suggests are ongoing 🧐 4d
Chrissyreadit wow!! where did you get these? 4d

I didn‘t really follow either of the trials that has awarded E. Jean in upwards now of $100 million (there is 9% compounded daily for lack of payment, so all those appeals & delays are adding up). I‘m not familiar with her writing style. Is it the best book I‘ve ever read? No. Do I support women? Yes. Do I support a woman that wants to donate her money that she was awarded to causes like women‘s reproductive rights, voting, healthcare? Yes

ncsufoxes We live in a world where women continue to not be believed about their experiences. It takes a strong woman to stand up to someone & stronger to take on someone like she did. I hope that she receives the money she was awarded (doubtful because I sincerely believe T is broke). Trigger warning because she does graphically describe the incident. #antifabookclub 1w
TheBookHippie I ordered this just to keep. I‘ve been following the story a long long time.. 1w
lil1inblue I'm thinking about ordering this just to order it. I don't know if I could read it due to the trigger warning, but I can put it on the shelf and lend it to friends! I've followed the story as much as I was able while avoiding triggers. I am in awe of her courage. 1w
StaceGhost I really want to read this for the marvelous list and court clothes intellectual gymnastics— I hope the other reasons can stand as obvious! Great review and rec 🙏 (edited) 1w

"Haven't you ever felt like giving up reading the newspapers and putting your foot through the television?
In that case, you have come to appreciate that the press, radio and television are the crassest vehicles for the lie...We subsist amid a forest of images with which we are driven to identify. We act less & less for ourselves and more & more as puppets of abstractions that direct us according to the laws of profit and power."
