Saving Five | Amanda Nguyen

Pickpick

“In America‘s criminal justice system, survivors become background characters to a story that is actually about us-our lives, our bodies, our dignity…Victims are erased from their own narratives.” Nguyen‘s story is about how she fought to make sure that women‘s rape kits are not thrown away while women take the time to decide if they want to pursue justice. She talks about the odds stacked against women to get convictions against their rapist. She

TheBookHippie This was so good. 5d
ncsufoxes highlights the insurmountable odds to getting a bill passed. The odds are stacked against women in the legal & legislative system (99% failure rate for both). There needs to be better laws for women to pursue justice. The loopholes need to be shut. #believewomen #fthepatriarchy #antifabookclub 5d

I am deeply alarmed by the state of the U.S. Many of you are, too. So, let‘s learn about fascism — a book club, perhaps. But, if nothing else, book suggestions. Let‘s start with WHAT WE KNEW: TERROR, MASS MURDER, AND EVERYDAY LIFE IN NAZI GERMANY.

Amiable Thank you for speaking out! And for the book suggestion—requesting it from the library right now. (edited) 1w

I've been reading a lot of non-fiction about fascism, nazism and authoritarianism in the last couple of years, but not in English and not necessarily of direct interest to US readers, so I'll probably lurk rather than participate...

It helped that while reading this book, I had Alexei's voice in my head, from deranged apoplexy to soft thoughtfulness. He's humorous, but as with much comedy adapted from standup routines, it's infinitely better hearing it being performed, so I again recommend checking out his radio show 📻🤣

"Here, I'll tell you what I hate - Fascism! I can't stand it, me, I think it's really, really terrible. I do. I think it's bang out of order. That's just me, though. You might like it, you might think it's OK. Indeed, you might be a fan of radical authoritarian nationalism but I think you'd be wrong."

One of those books that is highly relevant to today & the continued fight for voting rights. The book tells the story of several key people that fought against racism & white supremacy to bring voting rights to Black citizens of SC. Their model was used throughout the south to enshrine voting rights that many were denied for too long. As we see with gerrymandering today, people who are in power are fearful when people can use their vote.

ncsufoxes The courts have recently struck down laws in Alabama, Mississippi, & Louisiana stating that they all have violated the Voting Rights Act (in particular limiting the vote of Black citizens). It is sad that people to this day still have to fight for their right to vote. This quote still rings true to this day, “Their real fear was that if Black people continued to register, they would soon outnumber white voters & would be able to decide elections.” 2w

To Shape a Dragon's Breath | Moniquill Blackgoose

Pickpick

I wish this kind of read was available when I was a teenager!

As a book about a girl and her dragon, this book was splendid fun. As a book about an indigenous island girl and her endangered species dragon, this is the kind of book I've been waiting for...as an indigenous reader, this fantasy is a treasure 📚🐉💖.

I prefer books without battles, but some may find this a bit slow paced.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal This was like a journey log from the MC's POV, with plenty of drama mixed into the storyline.

I was trying to keep away from books that capture some of the darkness that is now our crazy, chaotic reality.

If this book would have been available before these dark times, I wouldn't have been as disturbed by the unjust society that Anequs and her dragon Kasaqua must journey through.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal Reading this now, during these dark times that we're all experiencing, I found this to be an unsettling read.

Unsettling, yet beautiful.

This world was well developed and incredibly detailed. All the characters were crafted with care and respect.

I would have liked more time on the island and learning more about the traditions there. Perhaps in the second book.

The MC Anequs held the resilience and dignity from real life Native Nations.

👇🏼
2w
AnnCrystal I've read books with lesbian or gay characters. This is the first with a bisexual character (Anequs). I liked how this gave a unique chance with two possible love interests for Anequs...although, I don't believe I cared for the polyamorous. At this point, I'm not sure who I like better for Anequs. I like both Liberty and Theod...but I'd prefer for Anequs to truly fall for one or the other, not both at the same time (that's just me).

AnnCrystal The magic system was just beginning to be truly explored at the end of the book, so I'm hoping the next book shows more.

I am also hoping that we readers get to travel to the unconquered lands, meet the tribal people there, and learn more about the indigenous methods of working with Dragons.

This storyline is incredible.

There are 511 pages divided into 87 unmarked chapters.

We do not care if it offends or upsets you because it‘s a political post and not “book-related,” because we‘re going to say it anyway: If you support a man who thinks teaching people that owning human beings is “woke,” you might be —nay, you ARE —a fascist Nazi.

Go ahead. The unfollow button is right up there. ⬆️ Don‘t let the door hit you on the way out.

JenReadsAlot I'm so beyond disgusted..... 3w
Amiable @JenReadsAlot At this point I‘m more disgusted by his supporters. He‘s never hidden what he is. This could have ended at any point if Republicans had any moral courage, integrity, ethics or backbone. But those concepts are apparently too “woke” for them as well. 3w
TheBookHippie He is who he is. His supporters and enablers are the scourge of evil. 3w

I mean besides smacking them upside their head and asking what‘s wrong with them? 3w
TheBookHippie @Aims42 I tell them I‘ll pray for them. Probs not appropriate 😂😬🤣 I would like a better response…my daughter says bless your heart. Honestly it‘s so off the wall does it even matter what we say? 3w

Deblovestoread 💯. We knew exactly who he was from day one. It is out there for all to see. Those that support him and those that are quiet even when they know it‘s wrong are allowing it to happen. Shame on all of them. And because of their silence we will be louder! 3w

dabbe One of the most P✊🏻WERFULheartfelt posts I have ever read. Thank you for your forthrightness and integrity. You hit all the “woke“ nails on the head.
