Zennor In Darkness by Helen Dunmore

Started this after seeing a discussion video on @shawnmooney ‘s BookTube channel about the author. It explores the complexities and nuances of human struggle for survival, contemplates morality in a world corrupted by colonialism, and asks, “What does it mean to be free?” A book which does not seek to provide easy answers. I took many notes and underlined a lot. Destined to be a top read of the year for me.

I appreciated this story, but I think it would have been better for me in print to help clarify the names. It also seemed the main storyline took a long time to develop and then was resolved more quickly than I expected.

For this one, the incomparable Nyambura and I chat about the controversial Ngũgĩ wa Thiong‘o article in The Guardian.

Poet's experience of alienation, violence, colonialism, colourism, racism, in Sudan (Egypt?) and the US.
The inclusion of Arabic within the poems is eloquent in conveying how unlikely it is that I can fully grasp all the layers of meaning present, (though there is a glossary and notes in the back that may assist) any more than I can share all the poet has experienced. Still, I owed it to her work to try. 1/2

This is a collection of short fiction by African and a few diasporic African writers from many different countries, including #EquatorialGuinea. I enjoyed reading it and being exposed to mostly new to me writers.
