I was doing so well... I was down to "only" 117 ARCs. Well, I reviewed and then requested and then...

Was just approved the three books above. So from #RushAThon start with 123 ARCs I'm currently at 129 ARCs. Guess my #ARCaDayAugust is a success.

Amazing artwork! Each chapter is named after a colour of the rainbow and the panels are tinged in this colour.

Hayden loves sciences, especially the science that's behind rainbows. There's a chance meeting with Isaac Newton, and a bit of magical realism.

A murder mystery set in 1940s San Francisco. The author paid a lot of detail to historical accuracy, which is something I truly appreciate. Yet the main story seemed to be overshadowed by the history of the place at times. Furthermore the characters lacked depth and I didn't quite care for them.

Masters of Death #audiobook while I'm (re)potting some baby plants I grew out of cuttings.

The Golden Gate (ARC) - nearly done, must write a review

The Death I Gave Him (ARC) - looking forward to this Hamlet 'retelling'

The Square of Sevens | Laura Shepherd-Robinson

Not having a lot of luck with my reads today.

ARC #1 - murder mystery that's a bit bland
ARC #2 - Romance set in Victorian times and my inner history-Monk is having a fit at the anachronistic dialogues/mannerisms, and the places/houses that are clearly not north England but much more North Carolina
🎧 #3 - Sci-fi that is a teensy bit dense, have to find a written copy to make sense of it

So, I'm hoping the tagged/pictured book is the one

Andrew65 Love a book with a map. Hope this one helps improve your reading. 8mo

rockpools It‘s got a map and sprayed edges… A lot going for it already! 8mo
julesG @rockpools I mainly bought the physical copy because it's a signed independent bookshops special edition. My reasoning for any purchase made on the trip in late June - I can get any book in Germany too, but I can't get signed/special editions. 😁 8mo
julesG @robinb I'm determined to continue the book. And I'll then write a loooooooong email to the author. Which will probably lead to me being banned from her ARC team after just one book. 🤣🤣 8mo
julesG @Andrew65 Flew through the first 5 chapters. 😁 8mo

Claire has been a vigilante serial killer for most of her life. After her father's (natural!) death she joins a grief support group, but not all the members of the group are grieving, nor are they what they seem to be.

This is a layered story and it was interesting to find out how it was all connected and came together in the end, but I found the repetitive writing from Claire's POV rather boring⬇️

julesG ... Claire's POV rather boring and repetitive and not at all funny or satirical. We see the secondary characters through Claire's eyes and that makes them caricatures and/or props to propel the serial killer story-line forwards. Claire is an unlikable MC who, in my opinion, only gains depth through the third-person POV flashbacks to her childhood. ⬇️ 9mo
julesG An interesting concept and I liked guessing how it was all connected, but I didn't care for the characters or the writing and might even have DNF'd the book had it been much longer. 9mo

Mehso-so

Maddy, recently fired Agony Aunt, moves into the country manor a distant relative bequeathed her. She initially plans to sell up after the 12 months of obligatory residency are up, but, of course, Maddy falls in love with the small town, the quirky townspeople and her grumpy lodger.

julesG I missed chemistry between the two characters. They acknowledge each other, there's forced proximity and all of a sudden they are all loved up. The transition was too abrupt for me, especially on Luke's side (the lodger). Maybe dual POV might have helped here.

2.5 stars that I am rounding up to 3

Fairytale retellings with Prince Charming as a villainous character and three of the charmed princesses bonding to get their revenge on him? Sounded fun, but I just didn't gel with the writing style and the overall 'it's supposed to be Pratchett-esque but trying too hard' feeling that made me dislike the book more than I liked it.

Full review: https://scepticalreading.com/2023/08/mesoamerican-zorro-retelling/

Sun of Blood and Ruin is a gender reversal Zorro retelling with a lot of fantasy elements that will certainly gain fans. Unfortunately, I had the impression the core story was actually the latter part of the second half of the book and the first half was later added to create a novel out of a novella.
