The Girl Who Stopped Swimming
The Girl Who Stopped Swimming | Joshilyn Jackson

Laurel Gray Hawthorne needs to make things pretty, whether she's helping her mother make sure the literal family skeleton stays in the closet or turning scraps of fabric into nationally acclaimed art quilts. Her estranged sister Thalia, an impoverished Actress with a capital A, is her polar opposite, priding herself on exposing the lurid truth lurking behind middle class niceties. While Laurel's life seems neatly on track--a passionate marriage, a treasured daughter, and a lovely home in suburban Victorianna--everything she holds dear is suddenly thrown into question the night she is visited by the ghost of a her 13-year old neighbor Molly Dufresne. The ghost leads Laurel to the real Molly floating lifelessly in the Hawthorne's backyard pool. Molly's death is inexplicable--an unseemly mystery Laurel knows no one in her whitewashed neighborhood is up to solving. Only her wayward, unpredictable sister is right for the task, but calling in a favor from Thalia is like walking straight into a frying pan protected only by Crisco. Enlisting Thalia's help, Laurel sets out on a life-altering journey that triggers startling revelations about her family's guarded past, the true state of her marriage, and the girl who stopped swimming.Richer and more rewarding than any story Joshilyn Jackson has yet written, yet still packed with Jackson's trademarked outrageous characters, sparkling dialogue, and defiantly twisting plotting, THE GIRL WHO STOPPED SWIMMING is destined both to delight Jackson's loyal fans and capture a whole new audience.

Book 102 I was disappointed by The Girl Who Stopped Swimming, which I listened to immediately after Mother May I (by the same author). Touted as a ghost mystery, the resolution was unrelated to the setup, making everything a red herring. ⭐⭐⭐

Thanks @TheSpineView for the invite!
1 -tagged
2 - The White Witch from The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe putted against Dumbledore
3 - Usually one - I sometimes struggle between the two characters‘ POVs unless the author does a really good job making then have distinct voices

I listened to the audiobook, which was beautifully narrated by the author, on a long drive to the Berkshires. It is a nice summer read, albeit a bit uneven, like the story won‘t stick with me for long afterwards. I haven‘t ready any other books by Joshilyn Jackson, but I love Southern authors so will try another one.

More uneven than the other books of hers that I have read, but still quite enjoyable. Jackson narrates the book very well too.

One of the many reasons I love visiting home is the local consignment shop where I can always find some good scores on books. This haul was under $60 and is a mix of books for me and xmas presents for my best friend.

It's hard to label this book with one genre. It's a mystery but even more it's a beautiful portrait of family - sisters, spouses, parent/child, and the lengths one goes to to protect what one loves. I loved this book and at times it had me short of breath waiting for the drama to play out. Excellent summer read!

I finally finished this one on vacation in Michigan. While it's my least favorite Jackson novel so far, I really enjoyed it. It lacked the humor of her other novels, but the subject matter was darker. In that way it matched. I brought this with me to two pools along the way and it was commented on both times. 😂😂😂

BethFishReads Totally agree 7y

I wavered on this one. I really liked it but feel it could have used a little more content. And I really disliked the end.

BethFishReads I loved her earlier books but the more recent ones are hit or miss for me 7y

This one was for my local (IRL) book club, chosen by another club member. Some of the characters were interesting enough, but there were far too many "and suddenly it was all clear to her, in a flash of understanding" moments for my taste--too neatly tied up in a bow.
