The Gender Game
The Gender Game | Bella Forrest
For fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent comes a story like no other... A toxic river divides nineteen-year-old Violet Bates's world by gender. Women rule the East. Men rule the West. Welcome to the lands of Matrus and Patrus. Ever since the disappearance of her beloved younger brother, Violet's life has been consumed by an anger she struggles to control. Already a prisoner to her own nation, now she has been sentenced to death for her crimes. But one decision could save her life. To enter the kingdom of Patrus, where men rule and women submit. Everything about the patriarchy is dangerous for a rebellious girl like Violet. She cannot break the rules if she wishes to stay alive. But abiding by rules has never been Violet's strong suit. When she's thrust into more danger than she could have ever predicted, Violet is forced to sacrifice many things in the forbidden kingdom ... including forbidden love. In a world divided by gender, only the strongest survive... ________________________ What Readers are Saying: "Bella takes this genre to a new level. Imagine the intrigue of Divergent, the suspense of The Maze Runner and the heart-pounding excitement of The Hunger Games. That is the magic Bella is working with her new novel The Gender Game." "Intrigue, danger and mystery at every corner." "Once I started reading, I knew I wouldn't be able to stop. I should have known how this was going to be from the cover. Million dollar? Million books? Million what exactly? While the idea was interesting, the writing fell flat. She could use a better editor. For a book with the word gender in the title I was also expecting more gendered characters, not stereotypes. There were a few interesting twists. I didn't completely hate it but I will not be continuing with the series.

My sister-in-law recommended this book to me. While the concept of this book seemed interesting (two nations divided by gender), I never felt like the world was real. I think the books I‘ve read in the dystopian genre that are most successful are because there are enough differences that you know you‘re not in today‘s world, but enough similarities that you can identify with it. I didn‘t expect the ending, but not enough to read the next book.

GingerAntics It does sound interesting. Too bad the execution wasn't so great. I would have read it. (edited) 5y
keys_on_fire @GingerAntics I think if you were interested, you may want to give it a shot. Since it was middle of the road for me, I could see someone else having a completely different opinion. My sister-in-law said she devoured the whole series! 5y
GingerAntics Hm. Maybe I'll give it a try. Makes sense. 5y

Didn‘t like this at first — the MC is obnoxious and she keeps making the same mistakes over and over, which makes for very frustrating reading, as she is also the narrator. However I like how the world building takes shape around the events the MC is involved in, and I liked how much the action speeds up in the last 1/3 of the book. The romantic lead was too obvious, but the gradually increasing tension was well executed. Just made it over so-so.

Linear I think I heard of this book on a "i can't believe this is a book on Amazon" article. It didn't get a good review I guess. A lot of people said it was like the Hunger Games but looks like a gender bridge between people. 6y
Elisa Yes I can see how it could run people the wrong way — dystopian novels take societal issues and blow them up to an extreme and build a society on that, and especially with the subject matter, it‘s a terse subject. But i don‘t really see the similarity with The Hunger Games. 6y

I was sceptical about this. First it's the name and then the comparison to The Hunger Games, which seems to be the case with every YA fiction released these days, but I was plesantly surprised. Only 28% in, so ample opportunity to change my mind. That said I would recommend bases on what I've read so far. My only wish is that the author picked a better name, maybe I'm wrong, it did catch my eye after all. #thegendergame #ya #bellaforest

An interesting twist on post-apocalyptic America. I liked the true feminist perspective as well as the story told with two societies that have no gender equality. The writing seemed fairly simple and although telling a unique tale and creating empathy and love for one character in particular, I didn't feel as connected to this community or plot.

MrBook Nice review! 7y

I'm looking for some sanity! I read the first two books of Gender Game series, they were just awful. Bad writing, bad characters ruined what could have been a good story. All I keep hearing and seeing everywhere is how good they are and they are the next big series.

Is there anyone out there who agrees with me?

For the last day of #MarchIntoReading - my #bestofmarch!
I read 19 books this month, and these 6 got my highest ratings. No 5 star books this month, but there's always hope for next month!
I had not one that I DNF this month. 🤓👍 Bring on April - Happy Friday!

I got this book through #kindleunlimited - once I started to read it (when I know I shouldn't start another book while I'm in the middle of my book club book😒) I didn't want to stop. I loved the main character, Violet, and was rooting for her from the get-go! There were some sketchy parts that didn't exactly make logical sense, but all in all its a great read.
Would recommend to anyone who enjoys a little crazy #YAdystopian excitement!

Anyone read this book? I stumbled across it whilst completely ignoring my resolution of not adding anymore books to my TBR pile 🤓

TheNextBook I have not but that sounds like a horrible resolution 😂 Nothing is wrong with an excessively large tbr pile! 7y

If you like the Hunger Games and Divergent then this is a good read alike. What happens if the world is divided into two factions? Matrus, where women rule and men are subservient, and Patrus, where men rule and women are subservient, are at odds with each other. Violet makes a deal to save herself from execution in Matrus by going undercover in Patrus and discovers more danger than she even thought she would face. #netgalleyreads
