Selected Letters | Charlotte Bront
8 posts | 2 to read
'Dangerous as lucifer matches.' That was how Arthur Nicholls, Charlotte Bront's husband for the last nine months of her life, described her letters. Full of acute observations, pithy character sketches, and passionate convictions, the letters are our most direct source of information about the lives of the Bronts and our closest approach to the author of Jane Eyre. In them Charlotte writes of life at Haworth Parsonage, her experiences at a Belgian school, and her intense feelings for the Belgian schoolteacher, M. Heger. She endures the agony of the death of her siblings, and enjoys the success as a writer that brings her into contact with the London literary scene. Vivid and intimate, her letters give fresh insight into the novels, and into the development of her distinct literary style. Margaret Smith's fine edition includes invaluable notes on Bront's correspondents, and Janet Gezari contributes a new introduction that relates the letters to both Bront's life and her creative accomplishment. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Real mail in the mailbox today thanks to #LitsyLove. It was a lovely surprise, and I can‘t wait to read my notes/letters. I‘ll start sending notes soon, too, and I can‘t wait for more #HappyMail. 💌

I also received my copy of The New Yorker fiction edition. Coincidence? I think not. 🥳

I saved my #LitsyLove so I‘d have something to do while my son is at scouts tonight. I was thrilled with all of the different pretty cards! Replies will be in the mail tomorrow.

#jb #justbecause 10 replies 5 new all caught up. Hope to write a few more new ones tomorrow. I am really enjoying the correspondence and appreciate everyone whose participating.

@Kaye

Kaye Great job ! I had 9 to do yesterday and got all caught up. I thought at first it‘d be really hard to keep track of who is who, but the more times people write, the more you get to know them so it‘s not hard at all. I‘m glad to see the old fashioned letter writing make a small comeback. It‘s also interesting that some folks write pages , while others write a paragraph. Definitely an interesting project. 😊 1y

batsy I've been staring at this picture for so long in the hopes that by doing so I might be able to absorb some of her genius 😍 🙌 2y

Moray_Reads @batsy @saresmoore @rohit-sawant @LeahBergen @Nat_Reads There's something about seeing these small normal things that belonged to an extraordinary person. The dining table is actually where Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights were written 😍😮❤ 2y
rohit-sawant @Moray_Reads Thank you for sharing! You‘re so on point about how fascinating it is seeing everyday things belonging to someone extraordinary. I absolutely love the Bronte sisters, especially Emily, and this makes me so happy. I hope you don‘t mind if I take a screenshot of this for myself. 2y

From the NYT I noticed this painting was on view at the Morgan Library & Museum (along with Bronte ephemera). This portrait of the Bronte sisters is by their brother Bramwell-- who erased himself from the grouping as he did in life.

shawnmooney Isn't it incredible? 3y
marixa Oh wow. I'm not very familiar with the Brontes, and didn't even know they had a brother! Poor guy. 3y
LeahBergen I love those Brontes (and the Morgan Library)! 3y
