Mehso-so

So I managed to find a detective story with a new set of characters from a (new to me) author from a LFL. I liked the main character Detective Stilwell, but the premise had all of the elements of a detective story with a bumbling counterpart, missing person, broken hearts, political motivations and everything that comes from this genre. Unfortunately this makes it a so-so only. Idk if I will read the next one. #recentlyread #nospoilers

Although I enjoyed the Catalina Island setting, the overall story didn't quite do it for me. It doesn't seem to have the sense of immediacy and tension that I enjoy in other Connelly novels. It feels like Connelly was trying to pack too much into this story, and I felt a little jerked from place to place.

Stilwell, a former diver turned LA County sheriff's detective, has been exiled to Catalina Island after a run in with a colleague. Now there's trouble on the normally sleepy island, and Stil has to decide whether to risk his newfound happiness to investigate a murder that isn't his to solve. Like Connelly's Bosch novels, Nightshade is meticulously detailed and grounded in a sense of place, with a lead character who doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Umm, a textbook thriller. Had all the twists and turns but sort of predictable!

#SeriesLove2025 Detective Stilwell had a run in with LA county sheriff‘s department politics & is exiled to Catalina island. mostly doing nuisance policing till a dead body is found weighted down in the harbor. 1st bk , new series. As Connelly does , the place becomes part of the story. I want to see where it goes. People that live on the Island keep a car in Long Beach , for appts.& supply runs.already mentioned legendary 1920s LB bar, Joe Josts!

Another new Michael Connelly with a new protagonist, how exciting!

Loved the first of a new series and the protagonist Detective Sheriff Stillwell that takes place on Catalina Island off the coast of California. As usual great characters and a decent mystery. Look forward to the next installment of the series. Get writing Mr Connelly!😁

The marine layer was as thick as cotton and had formed a thousand-foot wall that shrouded the enter to the harbour.

I have jumped about 10 Connellys on my TBR but this is a new series, and a library express loan!

My husband has read a ton of Connelly. I thought it would be fun to also read this one set on Catalina. If he continues writing this as a series, I‘d read the next one.
