#BookMail Pt12 This one has been on my book depository wishlist for over a year now. When I saw the prompts in #Booked2019 about indigenous authors, I thought it was a perfect excuse for acquiring it. Not that I need a lot of reasons to buy books Set in a dystopian Australia, Ashala Wolf is a member of The Tribe, runaways hiding in the Firstwood. But she‘s betrayed by a spy & forced into a machine that will uncover all her secrets about the Tribe.

The #eyesoncovers prompt reminds me that I need to go back and read the second and third book in this post-apocalyptic YA series. The first one (Ashala Wolf) was terrific.

Smart, diverse YA, by an indigenous Australian author.

In this post-apocalyptic future, outcasts with X-Men type abilities are called Illegals and held in Detention centres by a 'benevolent' government. Release is granted only to the most useful and non-threatening few. Society is divided over the treatment of the Illegals. Hmmm, real world parallels? 🤔

Loved the subtly incorporated Aboriginal lore and Western Australian landscape.

mischa I've had this on my kindle for ages. Really need to get to it soon! 7y
Marchpane @mischa it's really great. I just downloaded the 2nd book in the series! Not sure when I'll get to it though. 7y
Lauredhel I love these books so much! 7y

Marchpane @Lauredhel I definitely want more from this world! But, it was refreshing that the first book doesn't end on a cliffhanger. At all! That must be so rare. 7y
RanaElizabeth This sounds amazing, I love Australian YA. 7y

I loved this book. It took a bit to get into, I think perhaps I found some of the initial world building a little clunky. But I am so glad I persisted because it was all up from there! Brilliant characters, super twisty plot, and I can't wait to read the next one! #loveozya

Seriously, go check out this mind-bendy YA dystopian by and about an indigenous Australian. It's one of those books you should just read knowing as little as possible going in. But full review on the blog if you need more convincing: https://shayshortt.com/2016/12/13/the-interrogation-of-ashala-wolf/

I've been on a book photography slump recently, so I haven't been active on Litsy & Instagram. 😔 It's also been raining for days, which makes taking pictures difficult.
But I've read 2 books already this month, a novel & a novella. My next read is The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf for the Diverse Sci-Fantasy Book Club I lead on Twitter. If you're doing #DiversityDecBingo, this book fits the Indigenous MC category.

rachellayown I've been on a bit of a Litsy/ photography slump too! Not sure why 7y
read_diverse_books @rachellayown It's just so hard to keep up with all these social media apps. Haha. Twitter takes priority for me. I'll use Instagram and Litsy when I don't feel burn out. 7y
read_diverse_books @kmdartist I haven't had much time to read. Will make some progress on the book today! 7y
rachellayown Yeah, sometimes I think I need to cut something out between all the different social media apps I have. Picking one favorite to focus on seems like a good plan. 7y
