Go where?' .....

'I don't know. I was thinking of somewhere warmer. The French Riviera, When the war's over, I mean.'

'I don't think it will ever be over', William said without emotion. In truth, it made little difference to him. The anxiety he felt for his own safety and freedom had somehow been shared out across the whole country and this provided a queer sort of comfort.

Helen is working as an art therapist at a psychiatric hospital in 1964, embroiled in an illicit affair with a colleague, when “the hidden man” is discovered in a derelict house and brought in for assessment. The story then dips back and forth between William‘s present - in which Helen tries to figure out how his life came to this - and his backstory. A gently told, unusual and gripping story, excellent.

I really enjoyed the mystery surrounding the origins of mute psychiatric patient William, but the love life woes of art therapist Helen, who is helping solve the puzzle, were a distraction.

4 Stars • In Shy Creatures by Clare Chambers, set in 1960s Britain, art therapist Helen Hansford investigates the mysterious past of a mute patient, William Tuttle, at a psychiatric hospital. Uncovering his reclusive life and a missing woman, Helen navigates her own loneliness, a forbidden attraction, and societal constraints. The novel blends mystery and romance, exploring repression and mental health.

Tamra I‘m nearing the end of the audio edition. I‘m enjoying William‘s story and the mystery surrounding it. Not so much Helen‘s issues. (edited) 5mo

A young woman working as an art therapist in a mental institution, in love with a married psychiatrist working there, helps a patient who has been discovered in a house that he hasn‘t left for years. He‘d lived with his aunts who had kept him from leaving in case others saw him. It could have been me and my mood but this was too long for the story it told. I wish it had resonated more with me because the outline of the story is interesting.

Reggie Messy therapists/psychologists are my jam. But the whole too long for the story told leaves it unshackled. Great review Sue. 10mo

This is lovely. Can you say that about a book that centers a woman having an affair with a psychiatrist and a man who has been locked away from the world for decades? I am not sure, but there is something so sweet and caring about this. I love how Chambers writes, I always fully believe she is writing from and we are in the mid 20th century.
Helen is a morally grey character but one I really enjoyed and I loved the onion layers of Williams life

ChaoticMissAdventures Read this now because I think it might have a chance for the Women's Prize Fiction long list. Her book Small Pleasures was longlisted a couple of years ago. If you read that one and like many absolutely hated the end I can reassure you this one is not the same! 10mo
LeeRHarry I love how everyone talks about the ending of Small Pleasures - my book ended up across the other side of the couch and I cried buckets - but I‘m down with that - one of my all time favourite books. I agree this one was very good - here‘s hoping for a longlist nod 🤞 10mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @LeeRHarry it is funny I have completely blocked out the ending in my brain 😂 the book comes up and I think about how I really enjoyed her writing and the characters and then the other person starts ranting about the ending and I have to be reminded. It was awful! How did her editor let her do it! 10mo
LeeRHarry @ChaoticMissAdventures it was awful but I actually thought it was great too - I went to see Clare Chambers talk about Shy Creatures back in October and when I got my books signed I said that I had had a real visceral reaction to the ending of Small Pleasures - and she said that basically it was great when books made us emotional! 😏 10mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @LeeRHarry she is not wrong, and from the people who read it she did her job well! 10mo

I didn‘t love this novel, but I did finish. It‘s an interesting premise: telling the stories of several intertwined lives revolving around the Westbury Park mental hospital. The story of William Tapping, a mysterious man who lived, seemingly imprisoned by his aunts, is the strongest thread. The love affair between Helen and Gil is the weakest. Generally, the book could have used a talented editor and an understanding that less is often more.

Suet624 Ugh. My feelings exactly. Needed editing. 10mo

I did love Small Pleasures, so I was excited for this one. But it‘s not the same. I gave it 100 pages. Oh dear. It started off well , but never pulled me in. I better go back on my kindle while I make a new list.

BarbaraBB I have Small Pleasures yet to read, looking forward to it now! 11mo
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB I hope you enjoy X 11mo
Ruthiella Ah well. At 100 pages, you gave it a good chance. 11mo

LeahBergen Oh no! I have this one stacked as I enjoyed Small Pleasures so much (it was a gift from you 😀). 11mo
Cathythoughts @Ruthiella I think I did. I just need to be more careful about the books I buy. I went a bit mad there over Christmas and into the New Year. Having said that , I would have bought this one anyway as I loved Small Pleasures. In general though I need to get back to trying a sample on kindle first. 11mo
Cathythoughts @dabbe Yes , I‘m good to bail. 😁 11mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen Small Pleasures was so good. I remember I thought you‘d like it too ❤️. This tagged one is getting good reviews, it was a bit too slow for me. 11mo

Library haul!

I already have 6 books out that I really need to get to, but these are #ToB25 and I feel like the tagged could be on the Women's Prize longlist for fiction

squirrelbrain Ooh yes, I forgot about Shy Creatures for the WP. I loved it, along with Liars. The Anthropologists was OK. (edited) 11mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain Clare Chambers has been on their lists before, so that is why I think she might pop up again. I am really curious about Anthropologists it feels like a book I would love, but could get annoyed with if it doesn't walk a certain line. At least it is short! 11mo
squirrelbrain I liked it but didn‘t love it. It‘s quirky enough to make the list as well, though. 11mo

A very very slow paced story compared to the wonderful small pleasures which was one of my favourite books of the year when it was published. Sadly this one is lacking , I found the plot slow and boring the main protagonist as dull as dish water Helen not William . The author based the story on a real life event from the 50s which is terribly sad , at least this man got a happy ending but overall found it lacking #readinginthebath

Cathythoughts Oh dear ! I‘ve just started and I‘m already agreeing with you. I loved Small Pleasures too. I‘ll give this one up to page 100 …. And then decide. 11mo

Oops, when I said Margo was my final review of the weekend, I didn‘t mean it! Finished this one yesterday and forgot to post it.

I loved Small Pleasures and this one lived up to it. Somehow, Chambers‘ characters aren‘t always particularly likeable but you still root for them.

I need to investigate more books by this author.

charl08 What a gorgeous cover! 1y

squirrelbrain It has beautiful edges too @charl08 - I just missed them off the photo! 🤦‍♀️ Check out other Littens‘ posts for this book to see - a few of us were reading it at Gladstone‘s. 1y

I said I wasn‘t going to go book shopping today but happened to be walking past Waterstones and got propelled in by an unknown force.

I couldn‘t revisit this beautiful copy, and it‘s signed as well, so it was lucky that I had a birthday voucher from @julesG burning a hole in my phone! 🤣

Thanks Jules! 😘

Oryx This same force made me buy this last week. The same force also reminded me to use a voucher. 1y
