Wonder Woman: The True Amazon
Wonder Woman: The True Amazon | Jill Thompson
26 posts | 23 read | 24 to read
See Wonder Woman like you ve never seen her before in WONDER WOMAN: THE TRUE AMAZON, an original graphic novel from Eisner Award-winning writer/artist Jill Thompson. Join Princess Diana in her early years, as she develops into the formidable hero we know and love. Young Diana has the fawning attention of her nation, but she soon grows spoiled and ungrateful. When a series of tragic events take their toll, Diana must learn to grow up, take responsibility, and seize her destiny. Acclaimed for her work with Neil Gaiman s "The Sandman," "Dead Boy Detectives," and more, Jill Thompson fulfills her dream project of bringing readers this new perspective on the Amazon Princess. Starring in her own feature film next year, Wonder Woman is at the forefront of media attention, and this long-awaited story is highly anticipated by fans of both the character and the creator. Steeped in the mythology of this iconic character's original conception, WONDER WOMAN: THE TRUE AMAZON is a fresh, stand alone interpretation of the most famous and iconic female superhero of all time"

My first book/graphic novel of 2023. This is just a gorgeous book. Jill Thompson‘s watercolors are extraordinary and expressive and this version of Diana‘s myth is heartbreaking.

Billypar I never grew up with comic books, so I didn't know about her Amazonian origins until the movie came out. And on the Goodreads search.....🤦🤦🤦 5y

Mehso-so

The artwork is gorgeous in this short #graphicnovel but the story just did not sit well with me. A mean spoiled brat Diana is just not the Wonder Woman that I grew up loving. Why?! #disappointed I give a so-so on artistic merit. #glorytotheguuld

This book presents a Wonder Woman origins story that is unlike any other, but it seems to move too quickly to make any real impression. That being said, it's not /bad/. The art is unique, and really lovely, and reminiscent of watercolor paintings. 3 ⭐️. #wonderwomanthetrueamazon #wonderwoman #jillthompson #dccomics

The art in this looks like it's super-pretty; I've seen some reviews that the story itself is kind of mediocre, though. We'll see! ⭐️ #wonderwomanthetrueamazon #wonderwoman #jillthompson #dccomics

I enjoyed this fable like origin tale of Diana. I am still a newbie to most superhero comics (and I'm far more familiar with marvel than dc). It's a nice little intro to Wonder Woman and I plan to read more.

I am also very much looking forward to seeing the movie this weekend.

Crystalblu The movie was fantastic!!! 7y
aeeklund Loved, loved, loved the movie! Are you going to read Leigh Bardugo's book when it comes out? 7y
Eyelit @aeeklund I'll have to check that out - thanks for the heads up! 7y

This is a nice little YA graphic novel on Wonder Woman. Jill Thompson gives her own spin on Diana's origin story and it's a really nice tale of growing up and learning that one's actions have consequences. For those new to Wonder Woman, this is a pretty good place to start if you're looking for something not bogged down with decades of story.

LibrarianRyan Loved this book. So much better than the rebirth wonder woman. 7y
Mccall0113 @LibrarianRyan this is my first graphic novel! 7y
LibrarianRyan @Mccall0113 you picked a good one. No confusing story line, etc. it starts the story from the beginning. 7y

The story of Wonder Woman's childhood and the events that led to her transformation from a spoiled princess into the honourable crime fighter we admire. I have great admiration for Jill Thompson's art too. 😀

I'm not exactly a huge comic book reader, but there are a few comic book characters I've been really fascinated with, and one of them is Wonder Woman. This is an origins story that can appeal to young adults--not too wordy and the imagery is enough to hook you in.
I love the plot line about Wonder Woman's costume: what are normally seen as symbols of truth and justice are made into remembrances of shame and atonement.

A Wonder Woman origin for young adults. Very easy read, yet gives more meaning to her as a hero. Comic book fans should read it and then give it to their teen daughters. What ever could happen in her journey?

I don't read a lot of comics, but I think this was a cool take on the Wonder Woman origin story. I read this for the #readharder challenge.

Confession: this is the first Wonder Woman comic I've ever read. It is seldom that I read DC Comics and up until now just hadn't had much interest in WW, despite being drawn to anything matriarchal. I don't know how it compares to the rest of the canon, but I did enjoy this origin story. The artistic approach was definitely the more unique of superhero comics I've read. I'm not sure if I'm compelled enough to keep following...I guess we'll see!

Jill Thompson's WONDER WOMAN: THE TRUE AMAZON is the character's third origin story THIS YEAR - but it is easily as strong as the other two. While those focused more on adventure (Rucka) and philosophy (Morrison), Thompson here brings Wonder Woman into the realm of fable, and finds the most startlingly relatable take on the character to date. Gorgeously illustrated and lovingly fantastical, this is a great new addition for the character.

Wonderfully done. A beautiful graphic novel. Except for the title page, Wonder Woman is not mentioned once.

I have a much longer review, but it's over at GoodReads. It goes into more details and NO spoilers.

brendanmleonard Wow, sounds like a great concept with gorgeous art! 8y
LibrarianRyan @brendanmleonard it really is. My full review is like 1500+ characters and I couldn't shorten t and do it justice. I think it comes out in October but it may be late September. 8y
