Wild and Precious Life | Deborah Ziegler
5 posts | 1 read | 26 to read
Written by Deborah Ziegler, the mother of Brittany Maynarda twenty-nine-year-old woman with a terminal brain tumorthis touching and beautiful memoir captures and celebrates her daughters spirit and the mostly untold story of Brittany's last year of life as she chose her right to die with dignity, a journey that inspired millions. On October 6, 2014, a video of my daughter, Brittany Maynard, was posted on YouTube. Brittany asked me to do the video with her, to support her. The first words my daughter uttered on the film were, The thoughts that go through your mind when you find out you have so little time is everything you need to say to everyone that you love. Wearing a simple black sweater, her face already rounded and puffy from taking prescribed steroids, her once waist-length hair now grazing her shoulders after a craniotomy, Brittany described why she was choosing to end her life by her own hand rather than waiting for her brain tumor to rob her of everything that defined who she was. In this poignant, powerful book, Deborah Ziegler makes good on the promise she made to her only child: that she would honor her daughter and carry forward her legacy by sharing their story and offering hope, empowerment, and inspiration to the growing tens of millions of people who are struggling with end-of-life issues. Wild and Precious Life is not a book about death, however. Instead, it is a book about a life well-lived. What emerges in this compassionate and lyrical text is an unforgettable story of how, while we cant control the hand fate delivers, we can decide how we play it. It is also a thoughtful exploration of Americas ongoing struggle with end-of-life issues and most importantly, a touching tribute to the enduring power of a mother and daughters love.

This book. Just wow. It packs a punch. And it's beautifully written to boot.

DeborahSmall I'm reading When Breath Becomes Air, it's sad and of course the writing is powerful, I will read this later in the year, I don't think I could take 2 on close together 💔x 7y

This is my latest library haul. I stopped reading a couple of books I was in the middle of because I just wasn't feeling them. I can't really plan anything but I'm hoping to read all of these graphic novels, comics and at least one novel/memoir. Haven't picked my first classic of the year. #ThisMonthsTBR #readjanuary

Christine Great haul! I loved (edited) 7y

It's my first day of winter break and I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so here I am at happy place @TheBookmarkPR where they take good care of me while @WanderingBookaneer is wrapping things up at school.

Of course, I was crying into my coffee reading this beautiful, heartbreaking and empowering memoir by Brittany Maynard's mom about her daughter's life and much publicized decision to die before terminal cancer killed her. 💜

Godmotherx5 I'm sure you know how to take care of yourself. Instead of advice, I'm sending hugs. 7y

Pickpick

In 2014, Brittany Maynard became the most public face of the controversial "Death With Dignity" movement. After being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, she used her situation as a platform to advocate for the rights of all terminally ill patients. Her mother wrote this candid tribute to the daughter she loved so fiercely. She discusses the difficult road of coming to terms with an impossible situation. More @ Goodreads.
