Nethercott very much wears her influences on her sleeves in this collection & that's not always a bad thing. One of my joys this year has been learning of the magical storyteller that is Kelly Link. If there is a presiding saint over this collection it is Link & the stories that reminded me most of Link's own work are my favorites. Such as when students are plotting the demise of the new girl, told in the form of an Abecedarian of Divination. (..)

vivastory Yet most of the stories just simply did not work for me. I can see why they would for others. I also will not deny that at the end of the year (& possibly beyond) I will still be thinking of that story. A decent one to dip in & out of. 1y

Short stories aren‘t really my favorite format, but I‘ll read anything GennaRose Nethercott writes with delight and awe. This collection is hauntingly beautiful - enchanting, weird, and deep. They‘re the kind of stories that are so interesting to see what others took from them, the kind that would reveal another layer with each re-read. My favorites were “A Diviner‘s Abecedarian”, “The Thread Boy”, “A Lily is a Lily”, and “Homebody”.
