A Concise History of Nazi Germany
A Concise History of Nazi Germany | Joseph W. Bendersky
3 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
This balanced history offers a concise, readable introduction to Nazi Germany. Combining compelling narrative storytelling with analysis, Joseph W. Bendersky offers an authoritative survey of the major political, economic, and social factors that powered the rise and fall of the Third Reich. Now in its fourth edition, the book incorporates significant research of recent years, analysis of the politics of memory, postwar German controversies about World War II and the Nazi era, and more on non-Jewish victims. Delving into the complexity of social life within the Nazi state, it also reemphasizes the crucial role played by racial ideology in determining the policies and practices of the Third Reich. Bendersky paints a fascinating picture of how average citizens negotiated their way through both the threatening power behind certain Nazi policies and the strong enticements to acquiesce or collaborate. His classic treatment provides an invaluable overview of a subject that retains its historical significance and contemporary importance.

This is my darling son Sam (and his girlfriend) he had his first A level exam today, actually right now. He's had a tough 18 months and of course I'm finding it very difficult being at my mother in laws the last month and not at home supporting him. We are very close and I had an email from his head of year yesterday as sam was in a state. Although heartbroken that he is going to lose his gran, his real worry if for me and how I'm coping...

Reviewsbylola Sounds like you have a really sweet, empathetic son. ❤️❤️ (edited) 7y

DeborahSmall So we're both worrying about each other. I have a lot of guilt that I'm not currently living at home and I've cried like a baby for 2 days worrying about him. He's a worrier and takes medication for anxiety, just like his mum. So fellow Littens I'd appreciate some good vibes sent his way and hopefully he smashes this one and gains some confidence going into the rest of his exams. These are the big ones that will dictate which uni he gets into ❤️ 7y

Time for some heavier reading on one of my favorite subjects, WWII! Time to figure out how Nazi Germany became so popular so quickly🤔 #history #wwii

Trav That looks really interesting! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. I'm listening to an audiobook at the moment called To Hell and Back -- 24 hours audio time (sigh). It's a rather extensive volume on World War I & II, the largest I've come across so far. 8y
Yamich49 Ooooo this looks fascinating! I remember one of my professors in college talking about how long it took people in America to believe that some of the truly horrible things were actually happening in Nazi Germany. I was always weirdly fascinated by it. Glad to see I'm not the only one! This is going on the TBR! 8y
Mayread They were not popular quickly-- but Hitler & Co became very adept at removing political rivals & taking advantage of the socio-economic conditions resultant from WWI. I strongly recommend the novel Blood Brothers, about Juvenile delinquents in the Weimar era. The author was a social worker- who was disappeared/murdered by the Nazi party for writing the too close to truth book. 8y

451Degrees @Trav I'll definitely put that one on my list to check out!:) 8y
451Degrees @Yamich49 I always felt like I was a bad person for being interested in WWII and Nazi history but it was such a revolutionary time for the world! New technologies and military strategies it's hard not to be intrigued by the time period! 8y
451Degrees @Skiles I'll definitely check that one out as well! It's just crazy to imagine how people caught onto Hitler's policies and that he was so popular. Probably because they were just getting out of their civil war and needed some sort of stable leader! 8y
Yamich49 @kyvo21 Yes to all of that! I also think it is important for us to know and understand history so that we don't let it repeat itself. And it has been said that Hitler was inspired by the Indian boarding schools here in the US which links it to my other interests. Okay, I'll quit nerding out over here 🤓 8y
451Degrees @Yamich49 don't worry I nerd out over this kind of stuff all the time 🙈🤓 nice to know I'm not the only one☺️ 8y
