The Regulars
The Regulars: A Novel | Georgia Clark
A fierce, feisty, and wonderfully entertaining (Scott Westerfeld, author of Uglies) debut with a magical twist about three ordinary, regular girls who suddenly have their fantasies come trueor do they? Best friends Evie, Krista, and Willow are just trying to make it through their mid-twenties in New York. Theyre regular girls, with average looks and typical quarter-life crises: making it up the corporate ladder, making sense of online dating, and making rent. Until they come across Pretty, a magic tincture that makes them, well...gorgeous. Like, supermodel gorgeous. And its certainly not their fault if the sudden gift of beauty causes unexpected doors to open for them. But theres a dark side to Pretty, too, and as the gloss fades for these modern-day Cinderellas, theres just one question left: What would you sacrifice to be Pretty? Wildly irreverent, blatantly sexy, and observed with pitch-perfect wit, The Regulars is fresh compulsive reading from a bright new voice (Brenda Bowen, author of Enchanted August) in fiction, perfect for fans of Jennifer Close and Kevin Kwan.

Did not like any of the main characters (and I don't think you're supposed to) and I was hoping for more out of this story.

I feel like I'm reading an updated version of Death Becomes Her. Take the potion and you'll be Pretty.

I read this in a single night and it was completely fun and distracting. Required some suspension of disbelief but that wasn't a chore. Weirdly enough, I found a sentence from my own book in it (total coincidence since mine isn't out til may!), which is the first time that's happened to me but probably not the last, and so I was delighted that women everywhere are into men who make "eye contact that is steady but not invasive."

MrBook Nice review! 7y
saresmoore How fun to find a sentence twin! 👯 7y
babsbourland @saresmoore is that what I should call it? It was weirdly fun! 7y

Giving is another pass through... I bailed a while ago, but the fact that there is a bisexual woman as a protagonist and that the novel isn't about her bisexuality makes me want to give it another shot.

saguarosally I was hoping to see more bisexual characters! 7y

Felt like something light and quick to read, seen a few mixed reviews for this one, it's due back on Tuesday so it's now or never

AnnaDesourdy It was not what I expected 😕 7y
Michelle_mck @AnnaDesourdyAuthor that doesn't sound good! 7y
AnnaDesourdy Without giving too much away I just felt like the story had a great message behind it but that message was completely drowned under other topics that were unnecessarily introduced. Hehehe I don't know if that helps. 7y

Alright Littens, this book is ridiculous. I may have to bail. I'm sure the author meant well but guilty pleasure turned into a nightmare. I may keep reading just to see if it gets worse....

This was a tough one to start a book club off because while I didn't hate it or consider dnf'ing I didn't love it and the rest of the group could barely get through it. Don't get me wrong there were several parts that I liked, but it was extremely vulgar and I'm not a prude by any means. I feel like the point the author was trying to make was a very important issue but the crudeness overshadowed it.

Hazel0303 Great review! Having only read about 50 pages and bailing I could see how that might have happened. Too bad. 8y
MrBook Very good review 😊👍🏻. 8y
Mamashep If you can't get the group to read the book, it's never good. They don't have to like it to make it discussion worthy, but they do have to tolerate it enough to get thru it. 8y

The Regulars is about a trio of friends who come across a serum that makes them truly exceptional beauties. This has all the makings to be vapid and eye-roll inducing, but this book is not what you (okay, I) thought. The characters have depth, and the story is thought-provoking. Halfway in, and I'm loving it!

A few weeks ago I had a coworker ask me how I'm able to read so many books. I don't feel like I read that many but I guess Litsy skews my perspective 😉 I said that my reading dramatically increases over the summer & would decrease when school started back. But the real answer is I find time where there isn't any: carpool line (pictured), waiting for a doctors appointment, getting my hair done. There's a reason I bring my book with me everywhere!

jpmcwisemorgan This is why I'm in love with my Kindle. I can carry around all the books!!!! 8y

Schuhbox I also read at carpool line, swim practice, soccer practice, etc and get rather annoyed when I'm expected to speak with other parents! 😀 8y
Zelma I also prefer this to other activities. I watch less tv and read more than many of my friends. I am not as up-to-date on movies and tv but I know about the latest books! 8y
WannBeAuthorAm I also keep a book with me! I'm person standing in a crowded diner with a book in my face, waiting for a table 😅 8y

My favorite spot for reading and relaxing has to be this lovely chair (an estate sale find that I convinced my parents to buy for me when I was a teenager, which has since moved with me from Philly to Brooklyn to Boston to Providence) in my living room. It swivels, it has a matching ottoman, and it's sandwiched between a big window, my record player, and the best air conditioner in the house. Perfection! 🙌📚🎶 #augustofpages #augustphotochallenge

catieohjoy Excuse the too-short curtains! We hung them too high, and haven't bothered to fix it yet, hah! (Too busy reading.) 8y

[DELETED] 2232195534 Some great suggestions here, many of which I've discussed with a book club. You might try the one I highlighted today, Ordinary Grace. Also, Persuasion, The Thirteenth Tale, Rebecca, People Of The Book, anything by Anna Quindlen, Big Little Lies...I could go on and on. Can you tell that book clubs at my library used to be part of my job? Ha! 8y

I don't want to say this book was bad because i think the writing is pretty good and the author did a good job of adding meat to the characters, but I just don't want to continue. Tried it on a whim and I think it's just not the right time for me to read this. Might try it again sometime in the future.

Fun read about three roommates that are given the opportunity to take "pretty" an unknown elixir that will make them absolutely gorgeous for a week. All about beauty and what beautiful really means. Great read for girls in the college years!
