Violet and Finn were meant to be, said everyone, always. They ended up together by the hands of fate aligning things just so. Three years into their marriage, they have a wonderful little boy, and as the three of them embark on their first vacation as a family, Violet can t help thinking that she can t believe her luck. Life is good. So no one is more surprised than she when Finn leaves her at the beach just packs up the hotel room and disappears. And takes their son with him. Violet is suddenly in her own worst nightmare, and faced with the knowledge that the man she s shared her life with, she never really knew at all. Caitlin and Finn have been best friends since way back when, but when Finn shows up on Caitlin s doorstep with the son he s wanted for kidnapping, demands that she hide them from the authorities, and threatens to reveal a secret that could destroy her own family if she doesn t, Caitlin faces an impossible choice. Told through alternating viewpoints of Violet, Finn and Caitlin, "Almost Missed You" is a powerful story of a mother s love, a husband s betrayal, connections that maybe should have been missed, secrets that perhaps shouldn t have been kept, and spaces between what s meant to be and what might have been."

This was hard for me to put down! Thankfully, I read this book during my holiday vacation so I had plenty of time to read in large chunks, and I was able to stay up as late as necessary to see how the story ended. This story about fate and how the three main characters interpret and also question the sequence of events in their lives is superbly written. #MountTBR

I listened to the audiobook of this and I really enjoyed it! It's been a while so I don't remember all the details about it but I remember loving it!

He‘d once heard someone call worrying a “useless emotion.” That was true. But if wishing was equally useless, there was no hope for anyone. All anyone really could do was go through the motions and hope for the best ⛱

A book about adults and the secrets they keep from their spouses. It‘s also about friendship, motherhood, grief, and connections that were “meant to be”.
I enjoyed the story but some parts were very unrealistic. I liked the audio except for the readers “kid voice” which didn‘t work for me.

SheilaChew Also, have to give another shoutout for the #Libby app! I love it so much and use it all the time! 6y

A refreshingly different take on a thriller. Definitely not what I expected! Not as good as Big Little Lies, but along that same line.

I enjoyed this book. The chapters ended on cliffhangers that kept me wanting to read. It is listed in the suspense/mystery category which is a mistake. I was almost disappointed looking for the big twist or shocking ending but this more a story of heartache and forgiveness.

Another 5 STAR BOOK!!! It took me months to finish this book because it was so amazing, I didn't want it to end & the nonstop stress from working my 1st full-time job hasn't left me much "physical book" reading time. Characters are great & chapters end on cliffhangers that keep you reading! Highly recommend it! This book will make you feel! It'll make you think of all the chance encounters you've had in life and go "what if". Haunting, but real!

You guys, I think I really need to take a break from the whole mystery/suspense genre for awhile. I just keep feeling disappointed. The Goodreads blurb about this book starts off with, "Violet and Finn were meant to be said everyone, always." Only problem is, I virtually hear no one say this throughout the course of the novel, and after reading, it's pretty evident nothing could be further from the truth. Sigh.

Trina_L I didn't like it either 😏 7y

This one is up next. It's another buddy read (we're going for a trifecta) although I'm a bit worried it might be too many thriller/suspense books for me in a row. We'll see!

I met this author last year at the Writer's Digest Conference, and couldn't put her book down. It's a #BeachRead in that a wife/mother falls asleep on the beach, and when she wakes, her child and husband have vanished. Dun dun dun. #SplashIntoSummer #SplashIntoSummerReads

Grief, secrets, and words unspoken lead to an unbelievable choice that destroys the fairytale life of Finn and Violet. Finn and Violet's story has all the pieces of a fairytale- beautiful girl, heroic actions, missed chances & living the happily ever after together with their young son Bear. But there is more to this fairytale & Finn makes a choice it destroys the fairytale and threatens to destroy them all. But why?

Reviewsbylola I read a few chapters of this one but it wasn't clicking at the time. It felt a little saccharine and I am not sure if I was just in a more critical mindset at the time. May have to try again! 7y

Too much narrative and staying inside the characters' headspaces for me. I understand it's the point for all of them to reflect on things they might not have considered early in their relationships, but it didn't work for me.

I was hoping for a more plot based story, but this definitely leans more toward women's fiction, which isn't my thing. Stakes could have stronger and motivations more fleshed out.
BONUS: I worked with this author two years ago when I interned for Writer's Digest. She's the kindest. ☺️

Violet is blindsided when her beloved husband runs off with their 3-year-old son. Did she misinterpret obvious clues? Maybe she'd only been seeing what she wanted to see the whole time. All the coincidences that make up a life--is it fate or random? The characters keep their secrets to themselves, but perhaps everything would've turned out better if they confided in their partners. For fans of domestic fiction who like a little bit of mystery.

For fans of Liane Moriarty, Beatriz Williams... Absolutely gripping. This story was so intense for me as mother that I vacillated between tearing up and feeling sick. The plot twisted and twisted. The writing itself, down to the sentence level, is *expert.* Reminded me of Liane Moriarty in the way she writes with the deeply felt emotional pull of women's fiction while also giving secrets teeth as is more often seen in thrillers and mysteries.

Started out great, halfway in I felt it became extremely repetitive. I found myself skimming pages to get to the heart of the story. Also never felt invested in any of the characters. The story has been told before; not many surprises for me.

Jessica Strawser's ALMOST MISSED YOU is out today (3/28). It's a suspenseful tale of a couple's marriage torn apart when the husband, Finn, unexpectedly takes off with their young son, Bear. It definitely captivates you right away, even if the characters can sometimes serve as their own (frustrating) worst enemies. Still, it's interesting and a quick read. It‘s a rare book that can make me sympathize with someone like Finn (esp. how he first appears, with his kidnapped child in tow & slinging blackmail threats), but Strawser has constructed such complex, three-dimensional characters that I couldn‘t help but hope things worked out for all of them, Finn included. I stayed up way later than I should have, turning pages as the secrets behind the characters‘ motivations (& misconceptions) were revealed.
