Hey Eric, do you not want to talk to a reporter about what happened at the house or do you want to intimidate a librarian into telling you about what happened at the house? I feel you should pick one.

Audiobook pick:
I think I may be in the minority, as I see some raving reviews on this one. I was bored for 75% of this. Later it did get a bit more interesting but not worth the slog to get there. Lots of telling vs showing in this novelist's writing. Not scary, just some moments of creepiness. I was overall very underwhelmed. The narrator was great though, loved his performance.

I do love a good haunted house tale! This sounds most promising! “The house would not let them live there without them doing what they were paid to do. The question was whether the money would be enough of a compensation for what the house might do to them. Eunice‘s previous tenants in the Masson House—Jane and Max Renner—could attest to that, presuming Max cared to ever resurface and Jane regained the ability to speak” (38). No spoilers, please!

This story was so odd & creepy but when the twist hit the pages at about 75% in … I was all in! Great haunted house book. For all the reasons to be cursed. It also makes me want to go see if a Spite House is a thing!!

I really liked the main cast of characters. Even the mustache twirling one. Good October book!

Same narrator as the SA Cosby books! ♥️

Quality chills. Very solid delivery of main theme: Even if an injustice sparks the spite it's corrosive to any who hold on to it. Rage becoming self-destruction/corruption or neglect and cruelty to others, even toxic masculinity to a lesser extent - [grandfather's motto, his bullying, imposing behaviour, show of force as power, messaging of how older patriarchs can really poison the mind of a younger generation]. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Really loved how the author handled the inclusion of what might otherwise be classic eyeroll-worthy horror tropes/plot holes.
Props for teasing the mystery of why the family is on the run, while also giving a truly believable set of circumstances of why they're desperate and out of options enough to consider staying in a haunted house.
Again with the initial reporter interaction, a much more skillful setup of a common horror trope (why wouldn't you listen to a sincere warning, offer of info about your dodgy circumstances?), making the character's disregard of help offered, plausible.
9mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Also skillful in bringing you into the minds of certain selfish, unlikeable characters, not really so you empathize, but so you see how often they don't perceive any wrongdoing in their actions, or see the ends justifying the means regardless, aka the slippery slope to becoming a monster of the real world. 9mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Makes really great, well-controlled, use of shifting POV - building up story and perspective of main characters, but also teasing snippets from other relevant people that give POV of house history in particular. 9mo
See All 6 Comments
Robotswithpersonality 5/? I enjoyed the parallel narratives of certain story aspects :
1) family mystery/drama for father and daughters; history of father with his own grandfather; dark family mystery of the Houghtons
2) Mystery of the house, why built; why haunted
9mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/? I could see parts of the third act raising some eyebrows less in shock than in stretched disbelief, and some outcries of 'not all mysteries alluded to solved by the end', but perhaps it's my atheistic self that finds the points at which the narrative chooses to dive into the loosely explained paranormal and where it chooses not to try and explain what mortal man can't possibly know or explain (assuming its existence) very appealing.
9mo
Robotswithpersonality 7/7 And can I just say how marvelous it was to read horror giving me all the creepy vibes WITHOUT needing to gross me out at the same time? Horror writers: it doesn't have to be disgusting to scare me. This is proof!

Basically I loved this, and will be eagerly anticipating the next Compton horror novel.

Unpopular opinion because this one has low rating but I enjoyed it. Eric is in disguised with 2 daughters, something happened in the past that they left abruptly. He needs to work and gain some money and need a place to stay for his daughters. Then, there is a well paid job offer where the catch? He has to live in a house documenting everything that he sees in the house. What happen in the house, what is the history. It has a couple of twists⬇️

5feet.of.fury I loved this one. So freakin creepy! 9mo
Gissy It is not perfect but I like this character Eric. It will turn in something paranormal that maybe that is the reason that didn‘t work for some readers. 3.5/3.8⭐️

This book was great. I really enjoyed reading it. It was very interesting. A father and two daughters are on the run from something (we don't find out what until the end). He takes a job investigating a haunted house for a large amount of money. This house is really haunted and puts everyone in danger. There are a lot of themes about death and what life is after death. This seemed different from other haunted house books.

A man and his kids on the run end up taking a job staying at and documenting a haunted house. Will he stay to get the huge paycheck so they can restart their lives, or will the house claim them as it's next victims? It was decent. I read it in one day.. A weird twist i didn't see. 3.5 stars.

This one was really strange. The audiobook narrator has such a deep, calming voice that he seemed to lull me into zoning out more than keeping me on the edge of my seat. There were also a good amount of characters and I found myself drifting in and out of the story without always getting who they were talking about and how they each related to the other characters. That being said it was still a cool concept and a great ending! 🌟🌟🌟

There is a lot going on in this twisty turn-y haunted horror. A father and his two daughters are running from their past and take a job that seems to good too be true. Stay in a house that may be haunted and document their experience and make enough money to restart their life. There is way more to the story though which unravels through multiple POV‘s. I think that was the one weakness-too many POV‘s. However, I still really enjoyed this ⬇️4⭐️

Nessavamusic Genuinely creepy! Note includes creepy children. #EasterOMC second book done! 13mo

I really enjoyed this and cannot believe this is Johnny Compton's debut novel! Drawing on southern legends and told from multiple POVs, it features wonderful character building, while adding a creepy and mysterious tone at the same time. I love that this revolves around different families and the supposed sins and tragedies of the past. This was an innovative version of the haunted house story!

I enjoyed The Spite House, but I do think it could have used just a little bit of polishing up. There were so many questions left unanswered, and the author alluded to the big reveal way too much. I knew what was coming before I ever got to that point. But it was a fun, quick, somewhat spooky read. So I don‘t regret my time reading it. And I‘d probably read more from this author

I can‘t resist a haunted house story at any time of the year! In various perspectives, a father & his daughters are living under the radar towards Texas. When Eric finds an ad for a job that seems to too good to be true, he comes to stay in the titular spite house. Built on land with a dark history, the house has a hateful presence. The plot holds some surprises- particularly in just what drove them from home. I wanted more chills though!

Welcome to Alabama. Where it never stops raining. Which makes it hard to take pictures of books outside. So enjoy this generic collage. Hopefully we will see the sun soon. 😂
