Tiny Nightmares: Very Short Stories of Horror | Lincoln Michel, Nadxieli Nieto
21 posts | 12 read | 21 to read
A collection of horror-inspired flash fiction, featuring over 40 new stories from literary, horror, and emerging writersedited by Lincoln Michel and Nadxieli Nieto, the twisted minds behind Tiny Crimes: Very Short Tales of Mystery and Murder (Black Balloon, 2018). In this playful, spine-tingling collection, leading literary and horror writers spin unforgettably chilling tales in only a few pages. Tiny Nightmares brings to life broken-hearted vampires, Uber-taking serial killers, mind-reading witches, and monsters of all imaging, as well as stories that tackle the horrors of our modern world from global warming and racism to social media addiction and online radicalization. Writers such as Samantha Hunt, Brian Evenson, Jac Jemc, Stephen Graham Jones, Kevin Brockmeier, and Rion Amilcar Scott expand our understanding of horror fiction with inventive and blood-curdling new tales. We suggest reading with the hall light on and the bedroom door open just a crack.

Me not finding these stories scary is not a big deal (I love horror but l don't often find it scary), but some of these so far, I'm not even sure how they are intending to be scary. Interesting choices!

I loved this collection. None of the stories are really longer than 6 pages. In The Story and the Seed, Hans and Gfiza are sent into space to find a planet habitable for humans. They think they find one. This one has good creep factor while pairing ecological horror over a futuristic Hans and Gretel tale. In the end, the planet eats both children, the planet hissing to Gretel that Earth has told other planets the stories of humans. Yikes!

Reggie @vivastory me too. 2y
Reggie @vivastory also, I went to go see Halloween Ends tonight and I thought it was fantastic. It made me think of a lot of things. It had this synth music that made me think of that 80‘s trope of the guy and the girl against the world, a la Virginia Madden and Craig Schaffer in Fire With Fire. Also there is a moment Jamie Lee Curtis gave me some Louise Fletcher‘s character from Return to Two Moon Junction vibes. I thought of the Billy goat from 👇🏼 2y
Reggie under the bridge. I thought of the Handmaid‘s Tale where Fred is trying to impregnate Offred while his wife is holding her. (Just fyi, there are no sexual assault scenes in here. When you see it you‘ll know what I mean) I thought this was a fantastic way to go out. I cried at the end. Cause I‘m a sap. Lol but really I‘ll say it again. We‘ve been spoiled this year with really good horror storytelling-minus the new Hellraiser. I hope you see it soon 2y
vivastory The amount of top notch horror films this year is just astonishing. I'm planning on watching Halloween Ends Saturday night at home with my brother. We're going to order pizza and have some drinks 🍕🍻 2y
vivastory I haven't even had a chance yet to watch the new Flanagan. Midnight Mass was my most frequently recommended movie/series of last year 2y

Days 1 & 2 #SuperSeptember #Readathon

Didn‘t have a lot of reading time over the weekend. I‘m almost halfway through Tiny Nightmares.

Reggie I liked this collection. My favorite is the Hansel and Gretel looking for a new planet to inhabit. 2y
JessClark78 @Reggie I think that was the last story I read in it. It‘s been good so far. 2y

I'm a huge Stephen King fan and other nightmare/horror books and authors. I read about this book and seemed interesting. Unfortunately, I was not a fan. Each and every story was quite abstract and just didn't interest me. I kept reading the book in hopes to find one story that I enjoyed. For me, this was a complete miss.

Thank you @Reggie and @vivastory for the rec! I would nibble one (or two or three or four) before bed. These authors (most new to me, so now my TBR is increased) work so well crafting horror in short form, and at least three of these I found actually chilling/disturbing. Overall I thought this was a strong collection depicting a wide range of nightmares: even the ones that didn‘t ring my horror bell might ring someone else‘s. 🧟‍♂️💀👽🔪

vivastory I'm glad you liked it! I'd love to see a follow-up volume & anthologies in other genres. Although not quite as good as TN their anthology of flash crime fiction is worth checking out 3y

Apparently, this is the prompt I‘ve been waiting for all my life. Lol
1. This was a delight to read and just like all good collections pointed me to some unknown authors.
2. Nightmares and Dreamscapes by Stephen King and Blue World by Robert McCammon. They just started me on my love of short horror fiction.
3. Standalone but don‘t mind the other.
Also just wanted to say thanks for all the well wishes yesterday. I‘m feeling 100% and am 👇🏼

Reggie just waiting for a few more days to take the test again to hopefully show a negative result. Ya‘ll are the best, Litsy!❤️ (edited) 3y

erzascarletbookgasm COVID-19, Reggie?? 3y
Reggie @erzascarletbookgasm yes. Two Fridays ago I got really sick. I haven‘t thrown up since my 20‘s so it was quite a shock. I had the worst chills and my middle 3 toes kept falling asleep. It was horrible. I got tested, came back positive but 3 days later felt better and now that I‘ve caught up on sleep feel fine. I‘ve been extremely lucky with how my body reacted to it. This Thursday will be 10 days since the last symptom so I‘m getting tested then. 3y

ValerieAndBooks What!! So sorry you‘re sick but looks like you‘re taking care of yourself well. Hugs 💖 3y
Andrew65 Just be aware @Reggie your re-test may still come back positive although you may no longer be infectious and over most of the symptoms. Speaking to our local director of Public Health he said you can still return positive tests up to 90 days after first testing positive. We have a child in school who still tests positive but has no symptoms and is not infectious any more. (edited) 3y
Reggie @Andrew65 that is honestly the worst thing I could hear right now. Lol oh no. I have to show a negative result to be able to go back to work. Well, I have plenty of vacation to use. We‘ll see how it goes but thank you for the info. 3y
Andrew65 @Reggie Sorry 😔 Fingers crossed 😊 3y
Reggie @Andrew65 it just means more reading, my friend. 😊 3y
Andrew65 @Reggie Now that is a plus! 3y
Reggie @Andrew65 I hope your week is going better Andrew than last week. Just wanted to let you know that I tested again and it came back negative. But you were right. When I asked the guy in Safety at work about my fears of continuously testing positive he said there were a few back at work who hadn‘t tested negative after a month and a half. Happy reading and stay safe! 3y
Andrew65 @Reggie That‘s great news 😍 One of my teachers is current,y fighting off Covid, currently on Day 5 for her and Day 8 for her husband. Dealt with that over the weekend but this week smooth so far. 🤞That Information came from our local Director of Public Health. Hope you are feeling better. (edited) 3y

1. @TheNeverendingTBR Posted this book and it sounds interesting.
2. I have not read any short stories yet.
3. Can‘t really say, but I‘ve heard that some stories aren‘t as good as others when people review short story books.

This collection of horror flash fiction, the literary equivalent of the fun size bar that fills up Trick or Treat bags, varies in quality as all anthologies tend to do. There's a tonal variety on display, from Rion Amilcar Scott's work of social justice meets horror to SG Jones' outlandish & yet oddly topical piece to Lindsay King-Miller's mysterious & disquieting piece. Just like the Trick or Treat bag. Something for everyone!

Reggie Yayyyy!!! 3y

Bold move, Monique Laban! I'll have to see if she pulls off the choose your own adventure format in a flash fiction, which would be... astonishing. The prior 2 works were *chef's kiss* especially the chilling Candy Boii by Sam Miller. Jesus, that was disturbing.

Reggie Ohhh, I‘m so glad you‘re liking this. One of my favorites was about the Vetala and how he talks about how the woman held her hand out into the sunlight and that‘s how he picked her. I thought that was beautiful. Until I remembered he was a vampire. Lol 3y
vivastory @Reggie 😂This really was a great anthology. I usually don't reread books, but I think I might want to get my own copy of this (I had checked it out from the library) There were so many works I know I will want to revisit in the future 3y

I thought this was great. All of these stories were less than 5 pages. They covered a wide array of horror sub genres and introduced me to new to me authors I want to keep an eye on. Witches, rats, carnivorous planets, the monster in the basement, global warming, the creepy guy who took pictures of you while you were asleep when you were camping alone, the haunted painting, this book has a little of everything. A great week before Halloween pick!

paper.reveries Nice review!! Sounds perfect for the season. 4y

Reggie @daisyheadmaesie Thanks, it was. And they‘re all perfectly snack sized. 3y
Reggie @GhostStories hope it comes through. One of my favorites in here is this Hans and Gretel, outer space, eco horror tale whose ending slapped me in the face. Hope you like it! 3y
Reggie @vivastory I didn‘t know there was a crime version. I‘ll check it out. One of my other favorites in here is about a caravan of migrants whose children keep disappearing as they get closer to the States. So good!!! Hope you like it! 3y
GatheringBooks I love the horrorfest here!!! 💕🧚🏼‍♀️🥰📚📚📚 3y
Michael_Gee I‘ve been making my way slowly through this collection and REALLY enjoying it. I read Candy Boii last night around 3am and then was wide awake. Every sound in the house had me holding my breath and staring at the shadows. 😱 3y

Reggie @ValerieAndBooks yeah, that whacko! (although secretly I believe we need population control but not with murder and crazy biotech viruses) I actually started this book last night and am enjoying it. With most stories 4 pages or less they really have to get to the horror right away and so far most have succeeded. Glad you liked it! 4y
