pickIn true Southern Gothic form, a reader's sense of foreboding is revealed via descriptive verse of scenery and weather. The isolation of the marginalized members of society along and their secrets leave one feeling unsettled. If kumbaya happy endings are what one is looking for then this isn't that book.
bailedHappily, I don't need a lot of pages to realise if I like a book or not. I need more pages to decide id I shall DNF or not. This one didn't make it. Even though it's Capote. But I really don't know what to do with this book. It's so... meh... And, sorry, I don't like how the African Americans are portrayed. Apparently, Capote does criticise slavery, but in this translation it doesn't show. At all. Maybe I'll try the original at some point.
so-soCapote‘s penchant for imagery runs a muck: “a night bird whistled in the fig leaves, a whippoorwill, & fireflies sprinkled the blue flooded air, rode the dark like ship lights.” If you like to read the 1st try of great authors &/or want to know what the Southern Gothic genre is, pick this up. Like many 1st novels, it‘s about love & the writer figuring out himself. The depiction of black life is shocking; it felt like it‘s set in 1848, not 1948.
pickI love old books... something beautiful about the smell and feel of the old pages! This old copy was a perfect match to the musty old feel of Skully‘s Landing and the amazing tattered, beautiful and dimensional characters of this story. Loved it! Merry Christmas!

An engaging coming of age story, moving between dreamy scenes and childhood clarity, the story follows a boy moving to live with his father after his mother's death. His father seemingly nowhere to be found, Joel spends his days exploring his surroundings, which seem to fall apart through the course of the book, and learning of himself through the people he lives among.

Day 9 of #Riotgrams is #LGBTQpride. My pick for this is one of my favorite authors, Truman Capote. Known mostly for his short fiction, Other Voices, Other Rooms was his first novel. It is one of my favorites.

I spent the last couple semesters of my undergraduate studies reading a whole lot of Truman Capote for my thesis. pickThis is the only Capote I've read besides In Cold Blood. It was weird, and the language seemed like it ran away from him sometimes, but I loved it. This is my favorite quote.
