Bedtime reading. 😆

I know that @CarolynM is a fan of this series … did anyone else read these as a child? Jean Estoril is a pen name for Mabel Esther Allan and I‘ve read some of her other books but not these.

LeahBergen @rockpools Her ballet stories were published under Jean Estoril but she also wrote as Anne Pilgrim and Priscilla Hagon. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Who knew? 😆 2y

mabell I love everything about this 😍❤️🐶🩰 2y
CarolynM 💖💖 Hope you're enjoying. 2y
LeahBergen @mabell 😘😘 2y
LeahBergen @CarolynM I loved it so much that I read the second one in the series immediately afterwards. 😆 2y
CarolynM I can relate? Don't you just love all the secret "Elizabeth Ivory's daughter" stuff? So romantic! And it made me feel sort of familiar with London before I'd ever been there. 2y
LeahBergen @CarolynM I do! When the name first came up (in a list of famous ballerinas) I though, “Hmm, I can‘t recall an Ivory?” I should‘ve known. 😆😆 2y
Centique I had a copy of this but it wasn‘t so pretty! I remember the title so well but I don‘t think I read any others. 2y

#20series20days Drina

Thought I'd throw in a favourite series from childhood. Drina, secretly the daughter of a great ballerina who died tragically young, encounters triumphs, tragedies, friendships and jealousies during her career at ballet school. Scenes of London life, glimpses of what goes into making theatre and some exotic travel destinations captured my young imagination.

Ruthiella Sounds wonderful! 😀 I have two left feet but ballet also captured my bookish attention as a child/teenager. 4y
LeahBergen Oooo, I‘ve always wanted to read these. This is a pen name of Mabel Esther Allan who wrote a bunch of different children‘s books. I have a couple and this one that I still need to read 4y
erzascarletbookgasm I think I would love these if I‘d discovered them when I was a child. 4y
Andrew65 Another series I have not heard of. 4y
Moonprismpower I‘ve never heard of these. I love being introduced to new books. I‘ll have to talk with my Children‘s Librarian about these books and see if she has ever read them. 🙂 4y

I'm away from home at the moment, but luckily I have a picture of my Drina books for #riotgrams #bookyouveownedlongest My mum gave me Ballet for Drina when she went to hospital for an operation - the note she wrote in the front is dated 1991. She bought me more as holiday books & I finished off collection myself - they didn't all match originally, but now they do - I picked up the "right" Madeira, Switzerland and Ballerina from eBay!

rubyslippersreads 😍📚😍 7y
AlaMich I have never heard of this series 🤔 7y
Verity @AlaMich I love them so much - they follow Drina from being a little girl who wants Ballet lessons to being a ballerina. They were originally written in the 1960s but were updated (fairly well actually, most about clothes etc) in the late 80s/early 90s. I adore them 7y

The Drina series are my absolute favourites - I started reading as a primary school child and I've reread the entire series perhaps a dozen times. For me, the books - about the title character's journey from a young girl banned from dancing to a star of the Dominick Company - are the written equivalents of a huge hug. I have all 11 but these 2 are special as they're the same edition as the ones I read as a child. #UKYANov #pre21stcenturybook

Best character name?! How can you beat Andrina Adamo, AKA Drina Adams! The world is lucky I never had a daughter...if I did, I would have named her Andrina & called her Drina after the characters in these books (her middle name would have been Rose after 1) Drina's friend Rose in these books, 2) after author Rosamond Lehmann & 3) after Rose from Rebecca West's The Fountain Overflows (and its sequels)). #booktober

8little_paws Wow I forgot all about these, but I remember these covers now. I can't recall any plot...I don't know if I actually read them or if I just can remember the cover! 8y
GlitteryOtters And, yes, I would have been naming my child entirely after books, but given that *I* am named entirely after book characters & that turned out pretty good for me, I don't see having a bookish name as a problem 😂 8y
GlitteryOtters @8little_paws it took me an obscene amount of time spent scouring the internet plus huge amounts of $ spent to procure all of these titles (many of them came from abroad). Totally my favorite books as a kid...we only had access to books 1-5, but once I was an adult AND the internet started to have online used book sellers, I went about fulfilling my childhood dream of getting all the books in the series 😂 8y

rubyslippersreads @GlitteryOtters I consider that an excellent use of resources. 😄❤️📚 8y
GlitteryOtters @rubyslippersreads I spent soooo much early 2000s money on these books...! Totally one of my best investments, though, even if I spent several hundred dollars between book costs & international shipping 😂💕 8y
RealLifeReading Ok how have I not heard about these?? 8y
GlitteryOtters @RealLifeReading I don't know!! They are so good/fun, especially the first 9 books! This is Mabel Esther Allan writing under the Jean Estoril pseudonym (I posted a photo of my collection of 60-something of her books last month as part of the last month's photo challenge). She is a really good author & these books combine her love of dance/ballet and her love of travel. They are my favorite books by her. 💕 8y
