Sailor Twain
Sailor Twain: Or: The Mermaid in the Hudson | Mark Siegel
25 posts | 24 read | 16 to read
One hundred years ago. On the foggy Hudson River, a riverboat captain rescues an injured mermaid from the waters of the busiest port in the United States. A wildly popular--and notoriously reclusive--author makes a public debut. A French nobleman seeks a remedy for a curse. As three lives twine together and race to an unexpected collision, the mystery of the Mermaid of the Hudson deepens. A mysterious and beguiling love story with elements of Poe, Twain, Hemingway, and Greek mythology, drawn in moody black-and-white charcoal, Sailor Twain is a study in romance, atmosphere, and suspense. Sailor Twain is one of The Washington Post's Top 10 Graphic/Comic Reads of 2012

2/5⭐ It mostly came together in the end but was painful/confusing/meandering getting there. Incomplete surface-level treatment of the characters. Boils down to a story about men being driven crazy by a woman, blah blah “all my problems are a woman“ angst, have seen it before and am not impressed. #bookspinbingo #roll100 (13)

Men write Bibles. God doesn't. God writes stars and worlds and seasons and Hudson Rivers and beautiful women. Creation is the good book.

A pick if for nothing else than the atmospheric drawings evoking the foggy Hudson and the enigmatic tension of the story. The plot concerns Captain Twain who rescues a mermaid and, the mysterious behavior of the two brothers who own the ship. Not gonna lie though, I don‘t really understand the ending at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

OK, as a matter of fact I *am* in the middle of a couple of other books right now but I saw this “Like New” copy of a book that‘s on my TBR list at the FOTL bookstore today and; for $2 decided it was a sign from the Book Gods!

A GN w/B&W pencil/charcoal work, the panels evoke a foggy riverfront past. The story features a 19th c steamboat captain who finds a mermaid. There‘s also a bit of mystery. It‘s all enigmatic but also very intriguing!

Swe_Eva I loved this one! 5y

First Second is one of my favorite publishers and this book did not disappoint. The graphics are in black and white but have so much depth and life in them. Sailor Twain has steamboats, mermaids, mystery and romance and is so much fun. Go check it out!

LitsyGetsGraphic First Second publishing is outstanding ❤️❤️ Glad you like this one ☝🏻 6y

Interesting quick read. I loved the style and dialogue. ⚓️ #readharderchallenge Num. 6 an all age comic. Might be a little mature for little ones considering the Lothario that Lafayette is.

#TBRtemptation post! A graphic novel telling the story of a riverboat captain on the Hudson who, 100 years ago, rescues an injured mermaid. A wildly popular author makes a public debut, a French nobleman seeks the remedy of a curse, & the mermaid all become linked. Elements of Poe, Twain, Hemingway, & Greek myth, come together in a story illustrated with black-&-white charcoal. Beautifully done. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Mehso-so

I chose so-so because I would recommend borrowing this book instead of buying it. The ending is open for interpretation, but the rest of it provides an interesting ride. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
