A Curious History of Sex
A Curious History of Sex | Kate Lister
This is not a comprehensive study of every sexual quirk, kink and ritual across all cultures throughout time, as that would entail writing an encyclopaedia. Rather, this is a drop in the ocean, a paddle in the shallow end of sex history, but I hope you will get pleasantly wet nonetheless. The act of sex has not changed since people first worked out what went where, but the ways in which society dictates how sex is culturally understood and performed have varied significantly through the ages. Humans are the only creatures that stigmatise particular sexual practices, and sex remains a deeply divisive issue around the world. Attitudes will change and grow hopefully for the better but sex will never be free of stigma or shame unless we acknowledge where it has come from. Based on the popular research project Whores of Yore, and written with her distinctive humour and wit, A Curious History of Sex draws upon Dr Kate Listers extensive knowledge of sex history. From medieval impotence tests to twentieth-century testicle thefts, from the erotic frescoes of Pompeii, to modern-day sex doll brothels, Kate unashamedly roots around in the pants of history, debunking myths, challenging stereotypes and generally getting her hands dirty. This fascinating book is peppered with surprising and informative historical slang, and illustrated with eye-opening, toe-curling and meticulously sourced images from the past. You will laugh, you will wince and you will wonder just how much has actually changed.

We finished listening to this one while driving through Iceland today. Since I am a language teacher I found the chapters about the history of slang words (e.g. cunt) very interesting. In general the book gives a more funny and interesting overview rather based on exciting incidents than on science but that is completely fine.

julesG I can recommend some books on swearing that might be interesting for you. 😉 2w

Full of information, anecdotes and pictures. This was interesting, sometimes eye-opening and definitely funny. I like Lister's humour.

Someone recently asked why I wouldn't shelf a novel with a yellow spine with the other yellow books. I explained the #YellowNFShelf and we got talking about books and linguistics and swearing. 😁

Today I started the tagged book (bought a copy two years ago 🙄🙈) and was reminded of Wordslut (and a buddyread with @squirrelbrain), which is how the #YellowNFShelf came into being.

As for the tagged book, it has a much more satisfying explanation ⬇️

julesG about "cunt" and it's linguistic demise. Lots of examples of how well the word did in history, with numeric evidence. ?? 2mo
squirrelbrain Oh, you love a good swear word, don‘t you?! 2mo
julesG @squirrelbrain I was behind the door when they handed out "prim and proper" ?? And swear words are just more interesting (for a linguist) than (prim and proper) verbs. 2mo

Great on audiobook read by the author. It alternates between fascinating, sad, and funny often in the same sentence. The historical sexual slang terms were hilarious (flapdoodle?!) and the author often cites the year said slang was first used. The topics range from serious (sexual assault) to odd (what was first used for condoms). Thanks, @thewallflower0707 for the #AuldLangSpine recommendation! @monalyisha 😊

thewallflower0707 I‘m glad you enjoyed it! It‘s definitely an unusual but very fun read. I highly recommend her podcast “Betwixt the Sheets” where she covers a wide range of topics on sex, scandal and society. It‘s amazing! 4mo

Ok, Spotify, how can an audiobook be “included in premium” but your service only allow a certain amount of time to listen to audiobooks? And if you listen at a faster rate, it still counts it as regular speed. Irritating! 😤

5feet.of.fury How many hours do they allow? 4mo
RamsFan1963 @5feet.of.fury You get 15 hours of listening time. The same thing happened to me on Monday, stopped mid book. I had to wait until today, when I played my monthly subscription, that I had another 15 hours. Of course I'll end up using 8 of those to finish the book I'm on now. 4mo
5feet.of.fury @RamsFan1963 ugh. I saw that they started doing audiobooks & I figured maybe I‘d get out of the dark ages & finally get a subscription since that‘s an added benefit. So, good for short books, but have to time it right… I‘d be so annoyed 4mo

RamsFan1963 @5feet.of.fury It's kind of my own fault. I'd listened to 60 Songs That Explain The 90, which was 9 hours long, then started the Doctor Who book. I didn't check its length, which is 15 hours, so it stopped after 6 hours in. I still like they added audiobooks without raising the price. I'll just have to pay more attention to the lengths in the future. 4mo
Karisa Yeah, it feels like it‘s better to think of it as one audiobook a month. You can pay for more time, but it‘s $12.99 for 10 more hours. It‘s odd they‘re using hours to count the time allowed with their audiobooks but don‘t use the actual hours you used if you listen at a faster speed setting. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
quietlycuriouskate I'm still peeved that only my husband (main account holder) gets the 15 hrs of audiobook listening. Daughter and I get NOTHING on our linked accounts, even though they're still on a premium subscription. 🤔 4mo
Megabooks This is just such an odd way of selling audiobooks. I just listened to a 14 hour one, so I‘m done for the month. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess it‘s better than nothing! 4mo
AnnCrystal ?? That is odd. They're taking away our CDs and DVDs, make the printed book more difficult to find locally...and then control the way we listen, watch, and read! All too strange!! 4mo

This book was a lot of fun in addition to being informative. My only complaint is that it ended. I‘m sure there are so many more strange and interesting stories about the history of sex to include outdated beliefs, practices, and societal norms!

Absolute fabulous book, I highly recommend it. The author also has a podcast called Betwixt the Sheets, which covers everything from Female Pirates to Medieval Sex to the History of Women in Football.

I Love Kate Lister‘s podcast, Betwixt the Sheets, and I‘m enjoying her book too. Yesterday, I learned that women started a petition to ban coffee, because they believed it dried men out and stopped them performing well in the bathroom. Also, the Kellog brothers invented cornflakes to cure serial masturbators. The more you know!

I wouldn‘t say this is a history of having sex, but more of a history of the language, body parts and functions, medical practices, and behaviors around sex. The author fabulously keeps historical details entertaining by using slang terms for body parts and sex acts throughout. A look at the historical perspectives relating to sex work, consent, grooming, and the fetishization of black bodies. Educational entertainment!

I loved every second of this book. This book was an absolute joy. I finished it in a day. It was so funny in places I was in tears. It was equally heartbreaking in others. I fully agree with the conclusion when it says we need to teach children about sex and not just about when a sperm gets it‘s hands on an egg.

GingerAntics As a historian, I am endlessly curious about how one gets into this particular field. Is there a university out there which can boast the best sex history department in the country? The world?

3y
TrishB There probably is such a university 😁 there‘s a league table in everything else! 3y
GingerAntics @TrishB right?! Part of me wants to go study there. I just have no idea how you explain that to people who ask. 😂🤣😂 Everyone is impressed when I rattle off “exactly what it is I study,” but I don‘t think they‘d be too impressed with “the history of sex.” 🤣😂🤣 3y

I need a complete change of pace from pushing through the final book of Dune, plus I have non nonfiction going, so obviously this is the most logical choice.

RamsFan1963 I listened to it back in March, and found it both funny and informative. Only the chapter on food and sex made me a tad queasy lol 3y
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 the only problem I had with that chapter was that I‘m allergic to shell fish and there was a WHOLE LOT of shell fish. I even googled… they look like ears to me. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
GingerAntics @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick it‘s a hoot! I‘ve laughed to the point of tears a couple of times. 3y
GingerAntics @Branwen isn‘t it great? She looks board, too. 3y

Giving this a pick, since it was informative and the narration of the audiobook by the author was well done. But I feel like the title of the book wasn‘t really accurate. The first half of the book was more of a history of genitals rather than sex. And the sex part was mainly related to prostitution and STDs. Unsurprisingly, the emphasis was on sex in the context of Western civilization. I‘m sure there are better books out there on this topic. 3⭐️

BookNAround The cover is cracking me up. She looks like he‘s completely missed the boat. 😂😂😂 3y
Kimberlone @BookNAround haha yes the cover is hilarious. Neither of them look like they are into it 🤣😉 3y

Eye-opening and eye-watering, humorous and horrifying. Lister covers a lot of ground in this fascinating study of sexual habits and attitudes. She debunks many myths both historical and contemporary and her playful style never overwhelms the seriousness of her messages about sexual intolerance and oppression and its intersections with misogyny, racism and the struggle to find voices stifled in the historical record 👇

Moray_Reads She openly acknowledges that this is a cis-heavy narrative because of the nature of this record but a chapter, however incomplete, on trans experiences and issues would have been a welcome addition. 4y

One of my non-fic picks of the year - already!! Well researched, funny, eye-opening - you‘ll want to tell all of your friends the fascinating things you learn in this. Some things you‘d never find out about otherwise, and some you didn‘t KNOW you needed to know about! The photos are informative and at times, titillating, and some are terrifying (doctors equipment from Victorian era and earlier 😱). Visit Whores of Yore on Twitter (authors page)!

ElaineR Sounds fab. 4y
