Dear Emmie Blue
Dear Emmie Blue: A Novel | Lia Louis
In this charming and poignant novel, teenager Emmie Blue releases a balloon with her email address and a big secret into the sky, only to fall head-over-heels for the boy who finds it; now, fourteen years later, the one thing Emmie has been counting on is gone for good, and everything she planned is up in the air. At sixteen, Emmie Blue stood in the fields of her school and released a red balloon into the sky. Attached was her name, her email addressand a secret she desperately wanted to be free of. Weeks later, on a beach in France, Lucas Moreau discovered the balloon and immediately emailed the attached addressed, sparking an intense friendship between the two teens. Now, fourteen years later, Emmie is hiding the fact that shes desperately in love with Lucas. She has pinned all her hopes on him and waits patiently for him to finally admit that shes the one for him. So dedicated to her love for Lucas, Emmie has all but neglected her life outside of this relationshipshes given up the search for her absentee father, no longer tries to build bridges with her distant mother, and lives as a lodger to an old lady she barely knows after being laid off from her job. And when Lucas tells Emmie he has a big question to ask her, shes convinced this is the moment hell reveal his feelings for her. But nothing in life ever quite goes as planned, does it? Emmie Blue is about to learn everything she thinks she knows about life (and love) is just that: what she thinks she knows. Is there such thing as meant to be? Or is it true when they say that life is what happens when you are busy making other plans? A story filled with heart and humor, Dear Emmie Blue is perfect for fans of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and Evvie Drake Starts Over.

I think of Marv. My dad. And I realize I don't feel lonely. In this moment, the empty loneliness that has always followed me around like a chasm, ready to eat me whole, is simply not there. I feel loved.

What a beautiful, delightful book! It‘s a bit sad in some places and a bit predictable, but it‘s such a great story that I didn‘t mind! Thank you, @MallenNC for gifting it to me.

It took me a bit to decide if I would like this one or not, I did indeed like it. When Emmie was 16, she released a balloon and Lucas found it. A great story about their relationship and how their lives evolved as they grew older.

Cute romance between friends when one sends up a balloon and another finds it. I just wish that the author had put songs on the playlists and had mentioned which movies were Emmie‘s favorites. Yes, that bothered me but this is a good read.🎈

Cute, quirky, & lovely contemporary romance. The writing style moved incredibly well with a good balance of description & movement. The use of dual timeline through flashback moments was well executed. Mildly predictable, but I didn't mind. The majority of the characters are charming & well-written. A few conceptual flaws including a misused sexual assault backstory, but a still a good, quick read that I enjoyed & would recommend to others.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was quirky and seemed to follow the #romcom formula. Nonetheless, it was a good book and a lite read that I #highlyrecommend if you have a soft spot for that kind of thing. It really is worth the read and the characters are heartwarming. #litsy #romance

This book reads like a movie. And what an absolutely beautiful read! Received it in the mail a few days ago, started reading in the evening and didn't put it down until I finished it in the early hours of the morning. Dear Emmie Blue might be my absolute favorite read of 2020. Lia Louis is such a delightful discovery.

I LOVED this book! It‘s super beautiful with strong character relationship development and just a brilliant plot. The characters are interesting and they really make you feel things! There‘s also some super serious stuff discussed and this gives the story a deeper meaning I think! The cherry on top is the brilliant and happy ending!

1. I keep most of my books unless I didn‘t like it or if I am certain I won‘t read it again. I do share my books with friends who I trust to return them!

2. Dear Emmie Blue was recommended on an episode of What Should I Read Next and it sounded really good.

I started reading Lia Louis's Dear Emmie Blue as a buddy read with @thechicklitbookclub and, at first, had major My Best Friend's Wedding vibes, though the tone is quite different. The setup? Lucas has been Emmie Blue's best friend since they were teenagers, when Lucas found a balloon with Emmie's email address in it. They correspond regularly, complete with mixtapes, and support each other through a series of difficult life experiences. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod The whole time, Emmie's love for Lucas has grown. So, when Lucas invites her to an important dinner, she imagines that he's finally going to announce that he feels the same way, that he wants to spend his life with her. Instead? He announces his engagement to his ex-girlfriend, the perfectly lovely woman that he's been dating. He wants Emmie to be his "best woman." ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod That sets off the story. Emmie, still pining after Lucas, is determined to be the same supportive best friend she's always been . . . while secretly hoping that he'll realize he loves her before it's too late. Woven through their story is the rest of Emmie's life: her distant, selfish mother; the father she's never known; her good friends and co-workers Rosie and Fox; her landlord Louise; and the figure from her past whose actions haunt her. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod I listened to this one, and I thought the narrator, Katy Sobey, was excellent. Louis's novel is, at its heart, a romance, but there's much about life here, too--we had some great discussions in our buddy read chat! 4y

Dear Emmie Blue, A beautiful story for anyone who has ever put a message in a balloon and set it free. Or maybe a message and a bottle tossed in the ocean. or maybe you just wanted to do one of those things but never did.

A book about untraditional best friends and family. About expectations and surprises. A book about being more in love with the idea of being in love with someone than actually loving them.
Continued in comments...

TheHeartlandBookFairy A book about facing the reality of your expectations and then letting go. And only then can you embrace the next right thing. And that next right thing may have been in front of you all along. Such a good book!

Wowza!!! I am not usually one for rom-com books, but this one proudly stands as one of my #Top2020Reads! I absolutely loved every page of this!! The book opens with Emmie celebrating her 30 birthday with the best friend she made through a #serendipitous balloon being found on a beach in France-& while the dinner doesn‘t go as she anticipated, what follows is a funny, heartbreaking & completely wonderful novel! Great characters! #BeautifulWords

While this book has nuances of “My Best Friend‘s Wedding”, it is much deeper and poignant than that movie. I loved it.

Emmie is a 30 yo living in England working in food service at a hotel. She met her best friend Lucas, when at the age of 16 during a school project, she sent a red balloon into the sky with a message attached…a secret that she was desperate to share and unburden. Lucas, finding the balloon on a beach in France, begins an email 🔻

amyrohn I loved this one! It was so sweet 4y
robinb correspondence with that leads to their meeting. Over the years Lucas‘ family becomes her family as she‘s never had the emotional support from her mom or a father her mother refuses to reveal.

I won‘t reveal too much here, but this story covers so much territory. There is a sexual assault (not too graphic) and PTSD to deal with, emotional abuse and abandonment issues, trust issues, lies and misunderstandings. 🔻
(edited) 4y
robinb But in the end, it‘s a story about a young woman woman learning to see her own strength, stand up for herself and rely on herself, and in doing so, finds that she already has all the support and love that she needs in life from her landlady and her friends. 🔻 4y
robinb Yes, she loves Lucas, but is it as her best friend or something more? And while yes, this is an important part of the story, it was Emmie‘s journey to self-healing and self-love that ultimately captured my heart.

Great cast of characters…bonus points for the dirty-minded, staunchly loyal, hilariously funny Rosie. My only con? I could have done without some of the language. Highly recommend. 4.5/5⭐️

Hilarious, tearjerker, romantic. Dreamy, thoughtful men. A great escapist book for summer about Emmie Blue, whose best friend Lucas‘s BIG QUESTION to her is NOT about asking her to start a romance. So what should she do now?
