This book totally blew my mind 🤯. The discussion of the difference between dopamine (reward) and serotonin (happiness) hit me square between the eyes. My diet this year has changed my dopamine fix away from food, so my brain went looking for a new drug. Looking at past Litsy posts, my book buying has climbed since I started eating less. Coincidence? No, buying a book does make me happy, but when is too much? At a certain point ⬇️⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 the constant stimulation of the dopamine receptors causes them to shut down, so more gives you less satisfaction, less of a buzz. I stopped buying books, for the time being, but I wonder if that will push me to something else in the search for happiness?? 5 💥💥💥💥 4y

Happiness is neither virtue nor pleasure nor this thing nor that, but simply growth. We are happy when we are growing.

#TBRtemptation post 2! Is there a worldwide corporate scheme to sell pleasure? To get us addicted, depressed, diseased? Lustig's contention is that government legislation and corporations' policies have led to ever-available temptations (sugar, drugs, porn, etc.) and constant stress (bills, work, the Internet, etc.). Science reveals how these states of mind are fueled, and he provides solutions. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

DivineDiana This is a Wow! 😳📚🤔 6y

This was a fascinating and compelling read and I highly recommend it. Lustig goes a bit deep into the weeds with the neurology behind our sweeping addictions, but it‘s well worth wading through. From smart phones to compulsive shopping and sugar consumption, it‘s all related. It‘s also making us a much less happy and healthy society. Two thumbs way up!!
