Seven Years of Darkness
Seven Years of Darkness: A Novel | You-Jeong Jeong
7 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
The truth always rises to the surface When a young girl is found dead in Seryong Lake, a reservoir in a remote South Korean village, the police immediately begin their investigation. At the same time, three men--Yongje, the girl's father, and two security guards at the nearby dam, each of whom has something to hide about the night of her death--find themselves in an elaborate game of cat and mouse as they race to uncover what happened to her, without revealing their own closely guarded secrets. After a final showdown at the dam results in a mass tragedy, one of the guards is convicted of murder and sent to prison. For seven years, his son, Sowon, lives in the shadow of his father's shocking and inexplicable crime; everywhere he goes, a seemingly concerted effort to reveal his identity as the reviled mass murderer's son follows him. When he receives a package that promises to reveal at last what really happened at Seryong Lake, Sowon must confront a present danger he never knew existed. Dark, disturbing, and full of twists and turns, Seven Years of Darkness is the riveting new novel from the internationally celebrated author of The Good Son.

After “The Good Son“ I was curious about the other books by Jeong. And while this one didn't convince me as much, I still think she's an author to keep in mind.

The changes of perspectives are too fast, which confused me more than once. Even after getting used to the foreign names I often lost track where we are and with whom.

It's a dark story, a desperate one. If you're interested in the dark places of human souls. This is for you. ⬇

Jari-chan It's dark and atmospherical. Jeong knows how to put her broken and desperate characters into the right environment. While reading there was an uncomfortable feeling following me. Jeong sure is an author for dark and gloomy days.

TW: cruelty to kids and animals, abuse

My August #roll100 is Seven Years of Darkness by You-Jeong Jeong. The first book I read by this author really impressed me, so I wanted to read another one. I can't wait to get started. My July pick will be finished by tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

I don‘t know where to begin. Creepy, sad, terrifying-Seven Years of Darkness kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn‘t want to put it down, but I also didn‘t want to read it at night. The depravity of certain characters, the meticulous planning, the desperation and heartbreak of other characters were all so exquisitely crafted. This is a book that will haunt me for a while. #readingasia2021 #southkorea

Librarybelle It sounds intense! Great review! 3y

An accident. A mistake. Gnawing guilt. Secrets. Hell-bent vengeance. This book doesn‘t really have surprising twists; there‘s not much of a mystery either, more like a cat-and-mouse game. A solid thriller with a lot more depth in exposing the wickedness within human. It‘s tense with an ominous feel, and the author did a great job in depicting the characters‘ inner psychology. Underneath the suspense, there‘re themes of 🔽

erzascarletbookgasm (continues).. domestic violence, abuse, alcoholism, and emotional trauma. A dark, thought provoking read. May not be for everyone.
TW: brief scenes of violence and one on animal killing (not descriptive).

An excellent thriller/mystery , well developed characters , Insights into human behavior , layers of abuse from the past coming into the present. Layers of worlds , real & imagined cleverly woven into the story. The girl Is murdered and the lake is her name. A haunting tale with recurring images that up the ante.
I preferred this one to The Good Son ( and that was really good )
Also it‘s for #booked2020 #PanAsianAuthor
