The twists and turns were well thought out and strategically initiated, plus I just loved that a great deal of the story took place in Lake Tahoe. 💙 My number one reservation about this book is that I had a hard time connecting with the characters, feeling that they fell a little flat throughout most of the story.

This suspense was well done. I really felt for some of these characters deeply while wanting to slap others upside the head, sometimes both at the same time. I was impressed with the insightful writing into con artists' lives and my attention was held throughout. It was my first book completed for the new year and I really liked it.

Two con-artists try running the long-con...and ultimately the real question is who is conning who? You may have heard that this is a little longish and tends to go into details about unnecessary things, and both those are completely true of this book. And these things are usually always deal-breakers for me...but for some reason, I completely enjoyed this despite all those things...maybe even because of.

A fun thriller, but definitely longer than it needed to be. I don't need to read every single scene from two different perspectives! Tightening the story up a bit would have elevated it from an average thriller. 3⭐

Two wildly different women--one a grifter, the other an heiress--are brought together by the scam of a lifetime.

1) I'm not sure the book I tagged is thriller or not but I was thrilling to me! 😃
2) Psychological thrillers
3) Stephen King

BookmarkTavern I haven‘t read any King either! My sister keeps trying to get me to read something, but I do not handle kids in peril very well. 😂 Thank you for posting! 3y
SheReadsAndWrites Right? @ozma.of.oz I love his books on writing but struggle with any kind of horror stories. 😬 3y

Pretty Things is one of those rare books that effectively balances character development with a gripping plot. As secrets are revealed (and there are so many juicy and shocking ones!) It becomes clear that appearances are surface deep and despite the perfection shown by social media, these characters are drowning in insecurities, nightmares from their pasts, and the dangerous idea of hope.

Very enjoyable read. Lots of twists and turns. And, even those that I saw coming were fun to read them play out. #ARC #Edelweiss

I liked this one much better than ‘Watch Me Disappear‘! Great details and twists! Everyone‘s a con and everyone‘s a mark.

My reading stalled out majorly this week (thanks to a stressful work week), but I'm excited to dive back into this, read most of the day, and just unwind #booksandcoffee

It took until the 65% mark for this book to get interesting but once it did, I couldn‘t put the book down. Lots of twists although none really shocked me, it was still a fun way to spend a few hours. A grifter, an influencer, a handsome hustler, a family fortune, a lifetime of deceit and a con that might destroy them all. #NetGalley #ARC #RandomHousePublishing available April 21

Tex2Flo That's a big commitment to have to get to 65% before you were sold. Not sure I'd have endured it. 4y
Cinfhen I read the first 25% then I skimmed a bit and when I got to the 65% point I was solidly sold @Tex2Flo had it not been a review copy I may have bailed😆I‘m glad I didn‘t though. 4y

Though a little too drawn out, I thoroughly enjoyed Brown‘s latest thriller! Told in two perspectives, Nina follows the family tradition of being a confidence woman instead of using her art history major for good. Vanessa is an heiress and social media influencer. Their stories converge in Tahoe and with characters that may not always be likable, they certainly come to life and are fun to read about! I can‘t wait to see what Brown writes next!

Opening lines tell me so much about whether or not I want to read a book. Pretty Things starts out with “When a body goes down in Lake Tahoe, they say, it does not rise again.” That hint of creepiness is definitely enough to keep me going!

Pretty Things by Janelle Brown will be on sale 4/21/20. Thank you Penguin Random House for the advance reading copy.

Check out the synopsis so you can decide if you need to add this to your TBR!
