For his Selected Poems, C. K. Williams has chosen from three decades of his work - ranging from his early poems to a group of new poems - to produce a volume that represents every aspect of his remarkable career. The book opens with poems from Lies (1969) and I Am the Bitter Name (1971), which introduced Williams as one of the most gifted poets of his generation, and moves on to an exquisite series of poems inspired by the Japanese poet Issa. These are followed by a substantial portion of With Ignorance (1977), where Williams first explored the bold, sinewy, capacious long line that has become a hallmark of his work - and one of the genuine innovations in postwar American poetry. The selections from his subsequent work, Tar (1983), Flesh and Blood (1987), and A Dream of Mind (1992), show him mastering that line in fiercely unsentimental, succinct eight-line vignettes, and longer poems in which his vigilant sensibility ranges over the American moral landscape with a characteristic authority and intensity of insight. The book closes with thirteen new poems in which the metaphysical aspect of Williams's recent work emerges with fresh and striking directness.

I first heard about William Carlos Williams on the Wonderful! podcast, and a few days later I coincidentally found this collection of his poems in a used book store. As much as I love a good old heap of flowery language, I also really enjoy the fact that Williams values the mundane without transforming it into the grandiose. Looking forward to continue reading!

I can't imagine a more interesting physical characteristic for the poet William Carlos Williams than a "hair whorl back of neck left side." I just love that. This passport is for the doctor and his wife, Flo Herman Williams.

Hobbinol These physical descriptions are so interesting to me. FS Fitzgerald had a scar in the middle of his forehead. Of course I was unsatisfied with just that! A scar shaped like what? But Dr. Williams' description is much more satisfying due to its specificity. 😊 @LeahBergen (edited) 7y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore The thing we talk about with every poem we read is "What can you tell me about who is speaking?" because it is tough for them to grasp that the author's ability to invent is limitless. They always want the speaker to be the author. I write "I am a mutant space cat" on the board all the time to show that the speaker is not always the author... 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore The kids were able to determine that there were two people involved, plum eater and intended plum recipient, and that these people were close, living in the same house because they shared the same icebox, probably a husband and wife because children would not be thoughtful enough to leave the note, and one girl told me a man had to have written it because a woman would have shared the plums... 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore Then we examined the end. Why does the writer keep going after apologizing? To kind of rub it in a little that the plums were awesome. Essentially "Sorry, not sorry." Apologies for the long windedness. I like to talk teaching! 7y
saresmoore @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Thank you for sharing. This is quite helpful for me! I'm often taken aback by my own kids' observations on poetry. I think your student who made the gender observation probably keeps a close eye on her parents' relationship dynamics. 7y
