“I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of inflections
Or the beauty of innuendoes,
The blackbird whistling
Or just after.“

Remembering Wallace Stevens on his birthday.

Whiskey+jambalaya+Wallace Stevens=perfect Friday night. The Emperor of Ice Cream is a handful of poems I have memorized.

alliworm88 I‘m glad that poetry is not completely dead and there are still those out there that enjoy it. I love the sound of poetry even though it is sometimes hard for me to wrap my mind around poetry like I do a novel. 3y
vivastory @alliworm88 I don't read poetry as often as I used to, but I still love it. Stevens is a favorite as far as the richness of his words, even if his meaning is at times elusive. 3y
alliworm88 Nice. I read poetry on occasion but 9 times out of 10, you will catch me with my nose stuck in a novel of some kind. Lately, it has been a book about 500 to 1,000 pages long but on my kindle and usually a library book (edited) 3y
TrishB I like that and love poetry ♥️ 3y
Nute You had me at jambalaya! Sounds like it was a perfect evening!🙂 3y

I *almost* forgot how great Wallace Stevens is

Eggs ✨💙💫 3y
SamAnne I checked this out from the library last month but did not get to it. Stacking so I remember to come back to it. I've not read much of his poetry. 3y

“The difficulty to think at the end of day,
When the shapeless shadow covers the sun
And nothing is left except light on your fur—

There was the cat slopping its milk all day,
Fat cat, red tongue, green mind, white milk
And August the most peaceful month...”

jewright I took a grad class on Wallace Stevens. He‘s very interesting! 5y
Lcsmcat @jewright Cool! I like what I know of his work, but I don‘t know much. 5y
jewright @Lcsmcat Honestly a class was almost too much. He makes my head hurt. 5y

"One must have a mind of winter/To regard the frost and the boughs /Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;/And have been cold a long time /To behold the junipers shagged with ice, /The spruces rough in the distant glitter/Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind..." #snowflake #QuotsyDec18

This, one of my favorite Stevens poems, tackles a serious topic with an almost childish rhythm. This is the entire poem (final line that is cut off is the final line from first stanza).

I have read and heard Wallace Stevens mentioned 6 times in the last 24 hours in a variety of formats: reviews in newspapers, on Litsy, in novels, on TV. What the heck???

minkyb No help here! 7y
Suet624 @minkyb 😏☺️ 7y
Joybishoptx Oh I love Wallace Stevens. Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird is one of my all time favorites. 7y
kspenmoll No clue, not his birthday - there was bio published last spring, documentary, but not sure why now. If ever in Hartford CT there is a walk based on his poem. @Joybishoptx http://www.courant.com/entertainment/arts-theater/hc-wallace-stevens-book-the-wh... 7y
Joybishoptx @kspenmoll oh wow! I'll have to check that out 7y

@Shawna posted about Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussman for #dreamingofawarmerclimate , which prompted me to reread this old favorite by Wallace Stevens! ❤️ #litsypoetry365.

It's #NationalPoetryDay Littens! Who's your favorite poet? What's your favorite poem?

KVanRead Wow. That blew my socks off! Love me some Wallace Stevens. My fave poet is Walt Whitman but the list of runners up is long, long, long. 8y
utterKATEness @KVanRead Whitman is fantastic! He's in my top five for sure. 8y
