“I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of inflections
Or the beauty of innuendoes,
The blackbird whistling
Or just after.“

Remembering Wallace Stevens on his birthday.

#Firstlinefridays

Look in the terrible mirror of the sky
And not in this dead glass, which can reflect
Only the surfaces—the bending arm,
The leaning shoulder and the searching eye.

From Blanche McCarthy by Wallace Stevens.

Thank you for my #poetryswap2021 gifts @kspenmoll !🤗 I have heard of Wallace Stevens but don‘t know much about him or his work & I‘m excited to explore a local-to-you poet. Cool that he was neighbors with your cousins too. I‘m a chip-hound, so I‘m happy to try a local brand & of course, tea is always welcome. Since I am as “moody” of a tea drinker as I am a reader—a sampler is perfect. The Florence Griswold postcard will be used in journaling.💙

TheBookHippie How fun!!! ENJOY!! 3y
kspenmoll I had such fun putting this together!!! 3y

Whiskey+jambalaya+Wallace Stevens=perfect Friday night. The Emperor of Ice Cream is a handful of poems I have memorized.

alliworm88 I‘m glad that poetry is not completely dead and there are still those out there that enjoy it. I love the sound of poetry even though it is sometimes hard for me to wrap my mind around poetry like I do a novel. 3y
vivastory @alliworm88 I don't read poetry as often as I used to, but I still love it. Stevens is a favorite as far as the richness of his words, even if his meaning is at times elusive. 3y
alliworm88 Nice. I read poetry on occasion but 9 times out of 10, you will catch me with my nose stuck in a novel of some kind. Lately, it has been a book about 500 to 1,000 pages long but on my kindle and usually a library book (edited) 3y
TrishB I like that and love poetry ♥️ 3y
Nute You had me at jambalaya! Sounds like it was a perfect evening!🙂 3y

I *almost* forgot how great Wallace Stevens is

Eggs ✨💙💫 3y
SamAnne I checked this out from the library last month but did not get to it. Stacking so I remember to come back to it. I've not read much of his poetry. 3y

Pickpick

“The difficulty to think at the end of day,
When the shapeless shadow covers the sun
And nothing is left except light on your fur—

There was the cat slopping its milk all day,
Fat cat, red tongue, green mind, white milk
And August the most peaceful month...”
