The Fixed Stars | Molly Wizenberg

From a bestselling memoirist, a thoughtful and provocative story of changing identity, complex sexuality, and enduring family relationships At age 36, while serving on a jury, author Molly Wizenberg found herself drawn to a female attorney she hardly knew. Married to a man for nearly a decade and mother to a toddler, Wizenberg tried to return to her life as she knew it, but something inside her had changed irredeemably. Instead, she would discover that the trajectory of our lives is rarely as smooth or as logical as we'd like to believe. Like many of us, Wizenberg had long understood sexual orientation as a stable part of ourselves: we're "born this way." Suddenly she realized that her story was more complicated. Who was she, she wondered, if something at her very core could change so radically? The Fixed Stars is a taut, electrifying memoir exploring timely and timeless questions about desire, identity, and the limits and possibilities of family. In honest and searing prose, Wizenberg forges a new path: through the murk of separation and divorce, coming out to family and friends, learning to co-parent a young child, and realizing a new vision of love. The result is a frank and moving story about letting go of rigid definitions and ideals that no longer fit, and learning instead who we really are.

It was tough reading about the emotional struggle Molly dealt with as she re-evaluated her marriage and sexuality. It was also comforting to read about her determination to find comfort in a tough situation and push through to a situation better suited to her. I felt like her journey to define her sexuality is not over by the end of the book, but self discovery is a lifelong experience. I did wish she‘d done more with the star metaphor. #LGBTQ

What I read during the Super Bowl. I loved most of it, but the last bit, with all philosophical stuff, was a little dry and made for flat ending. Off to re-ready the author‘s A Homemade Life.

A lovely memoir about a woman who unexpectedly experiences queer desire in her mid thirties after a decade of marriage to a man and a lifetime of believing she was straight. Themes: the knowability of the self, balancing motherhood with following your own path, and marriage / divorce. I always love to read about different queer stories that deviate from the "I always knew" category. Some beautiful little wise nuggets of writing in here too.

"But the ground did not resolidify. It was porous now, and fertile. I watched my desire spread like seeds on a stuff wind, stick to women in coffee shops and on the street and outside school. The seeds bloomed, proliferated like invasives."

"The constellations we see are temporary human creations, our effort to draw order and meaning from a mostly unknowable universe, to tell ourselves stories, to guide our way home across endless oceans.

Marriage is like that too: a method we've devised to protect against the outside world, to make sense of the wonderful nonsense that is love."

I enjoyed this memoir about marriage, motherhood and sexual identity. Molly Wizenberg thought she was straight until she began obsessing over a woman she met during jury duty. Molly and her husband explore opening their marriage, and learn to talk about feelings they hadn‘t voiced previously. They end up divorced, yet remain friends. The whole journey is interesting. #Audiobook read by Erin Mallon. #LGBTQ

As I envisioned it, my husband and I would be separate people. We would be as important individually as we were together, as a couple. We‘d be discrete entities with our own histories, energy and motion, but we‘d be bound to each other like stars in a constellation, a union born by the force of imagination and emotion, by the curious work of the human mind.

I find it fascinating when people who are lacking in insight about their own lives and circumstances write memoirs about those circumstances. Even when the author was with her husband, they talk themselves into something which obviously wasn‘t the case. Nonetheless, this book made me think about gender and sexual orientation, so I feel that‘s worthwhile. The audio is a bit choppy, but I don‘t know if that‘s the writing or the reader.

Oh God, how do I rate / review this memoir?
Molly‘s writing is beautiful. Soulful and raw, bold and honest but I‘m not sure necessary. This book felt like Molly needed to unburden her heavy load, to ease her conscience, maybe tell her “side” of the story. I think the author is a loving mother, but I question how her daughter June will receive this book in the coming years. Not my favorite memoir.
4 stars for writing

TrishB Ouch, I suppose that‘s the problem with NF where others are involved! 4y
8little_paws I saw another review somewhere that said they didn't think Molly had enough distance btw. this period of her life and the writing of this memoir. That she didn't seem to have really processed things yet. I haven't read this and not sure I will b/c divorce memoirs aren't really my jam. But that makes me think of Educated, and while her life story there was fascinating that book too made me feel like she hadn't really processed things. 4y
Cinfhen Yeah, I agree with that point @8little_paws this was definitely a divorce memoir where she was still going through the process without processing the experience 4y
Hooked_on_books Interesting response. I have this audio on hold and now I actually look forward to it a bit more. I‘ll be listening to it with your review in mind. 🤔 4y
Cinfhen Can‘t wait to hear your thoughts after you get to it, Holly! I also loved A Homemade Life, so I went into this book with high expectations @Hooked_on_books 4y
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen I hadn‘t heard of that one, but it sounds interesting! I‘ll have to keep it on my radar. 4y
Cinfhen Read the print copy as opposed to the audio for Homemade Life @Hooked_on_books Book includes tons of recipes that seemed amazing but it was difficult to follow them on audio 4y
peaKnit I just loved her first two books and have made recipes out of homemade life. Just starting this one today🤞🏼 4y
Cinfhen I bought HomeMade Life after borrowing the audio from the library because the recipes sounded SO GOOD and not too difficult @peaknit LMK what u make of this one!!!! 4y
peaKnit I follow her blog and had stopped for awhile, and went back and a lot had changed, so I preordered too to catch up! So far, in my opinion, it‘s a ramble in first 30%. 4y

Molly Wizenberg tells her story of coming out when she was married to her husband Brandon. She is a memoirist by trade, so her writing seems seamless and flows very well throughout the book.

5🌟Memoir explores sexual orientation and identities complexities. At 36, Molly Wizenberg found herself attracted to a lesbian attorney she barely knew. At the time she was a mother to a toddler and had been married to her best friend, father of her child for almost a decade. The Fixed Stars is her journey of finding herself and her truth.
Written with sheer honesty, and much intimacy. Out Aug 4th! #bookreview

Just ok. I recently read Glennon Doyle‘s latest and, interestingly, it was similar to this but I enjoyed that one more. #ARC #netgalley

So I‘m currently listening to A HomeMade life by Molly Wizenberg ( it‘s REALLY GOOD) and I came across a new memoir by her, releasing May 2020. This new one sounds super fascinating. I‘m actually compelled to place the pre-order. I normally wait but I feel like treating myself. #TreatYoShelf
