So We Can Glow
So We Can Glow: Stories | Leesa Cross-Smith
14 posts | 5 read | 18 to read
A lush, glittering short story collection exploring female obsession and desire by an award-winning writer Roxane Gay calls "a consummate storyteller." From Kentucky to the California desert, these forty-two short stories expose the glossy and matte hearts of girls and women in moments of obsessive desire and fantasy, wildness and bad behavior, brokenness and fearlessness, and more. Teenage girls sneak out on a summer night to meet their boyfriends by the train tracks. A woman escapes suffocating grief through a vivid fantasy life. Members of a cult form an unsettling chorus as they extol their passion for the same man. A love story begins over cabbages in a grocery store. A laundress' life is consumed by obsession for a famous baseball player. Two high school friends kiss all night and binge-watch Winona Ryder movies after the death of a sister. Leesa Cross-Smith's sensuous stories will drench readers in nostalgia for summer nights and sultry days, the intense friendships of teenage girls, and the innate bonds felt between women. She evokes the pangs of loss and motherhood, the headiness and destructive potential of desire, and the pure exhilaration of being female. The stories in So We Can Glow--some long, some gone in a flash, some told over text and emails--take the wild hearts of girls and women and hold them up so they can catch the light.

This short story collection from a local Kentucky author really hit the spot. She wrote heavily pop culture-influenced looks a women on the verge sexually. On the verge of affairs or coming of age or rediscovering themselves. The stories were short, well focused, and several checked in on the same characters from multiple perspectives. Highly recommend!

The Taylor Swift Time Person of the Year profile (some top tier writing in and of itself) has me once again thinking of one of my favorite short stories—“Girlheart Cake With Glitter Frosting” by Leesa Cross-Smith from her collection So We Can Glow.

A play on form that manages to evoke emotion from me I‘m still not really sure how it does. A celebration of stereotypical girlhood and womanhood.

I loved this one. I mentioned in a previous post about it that I found it inspiring and that it made me want to write my own stories. Well, here at the end of it, that still holds true. This was just so good. I love how some of the stories looped back on themselves with the same characters appearing in several different stories. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!

I‘m really loving this book so far! I‘m about 20% of the way through, and it‘s inspiring me to try writing my own short stories. If that‘s not a win, I don‘t know what is! :)

📚🎧 The 1st tiny introductory story says it all. This is a short book full of even shorter stories written for & by women! For all women. Good, bad, happy, sad, crazy, moms, sisters, lovers, cheaters, friends, enemies; any race, sexual orientation, size or age, all women!

Whichever one you are you‘ll find something in this book that will ring true. Felt real. I plan on annotating the book 😁🖤

LOVED IT!

Thank you @Hazel2019 🤗❤️🤗

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Twainy PS - adult book - sorry I didn‘t mean the book was for any age to read. More like you can relate as the stories range across the ages. 3y

4/5🌟This is a smart, fun collection! All about women and focus on love, youth, heartache, sisterhood, heartbreak, desire, motherhood, wives, female friendships, and strength. Cross-Smith is a talented writer and I was so impressed with her story telling abilities. She had me nostalgic for my 90's youth, the comfort of teenage friendships, tv shows, hot summers and Winona Ryder movies. Recommend checking this one out! #bookstagram

There is a beautiful longing to these stories. They are often short, because they encapsulate a particular mood or moment. While I usually like my short stories weird, there was an emotional rawness here that I undeniably connected to. I loved how some stories connect back in on each other. But what really struck me was how Cross-Smith writes about different angles of womanhood with compassion and depth.

mdemanatee @AkashaVampie me too! One of my artist friends made it for me. She has a similar series on canvas I love especially for the texture but since I can‘t hang art in my space right now this makes me super happy ☺️ 4y
AkashaVampie @mdemanatee that is one thing I miss out on since I either do ebooks or audiobooks. But I do appreciate a good looking bookmark. 4y
mdemanatee @AkashaVampie I‘ll admit I tended to use paper scraps and receipts before so this was definitely an upgrade. 4y
