The Word Made Flesh
The Word Made Flesh: A History of Christian Thought | Margaret R. Miles
5 posts | 1 to read
This outstanding textbook offers an original history of Christian thought, asking what it has meant over the centuries to participate in the religion of the Word made flesh. Traces Christian ideas, conversations, experiences and practices from the first century through to the dawn of modernity at the end of the eighteenth century. Presents an inclusive history, considering the critical roles of women and religious others dissenting Christians, Jews and Muslims in shaping Christian thought. Sets Christian ideas in the context of conversations, controversies and concrete circumstances. Demonstrates the importance of liturgical and devotional exercises to the practice of Christianity. Treats words, images, music and architecture all as primary evidence of Christian traditions. Is accompanied by a CD Rom containing hundreds of visuals to support the theories and examples discussed throughout the volume.

Drinking some Himalayan Wonder First Flush Orthodox Black Tea from Teesta, my favorite loose leaf black tea right now. ?

#TIL about the 15th/16th c. "burning sickness," which was caused by the poisonous fungus ergot; abscesses on the trunk of the body spread to the limbs, "detaching them little by little from the torso." ? The Isenheim Altarpiece depicts a crucified Christ with the burning sickness. #NFNov @rsteve388 @Clwojick

Megabooks There are all kinds of fun ergots that grow on grains! Toxicology class in vet school! 4y
Caterina @Megabooks Ohhh cool! This particular outbreak was on grains of rye! Also I'm glad the surgery went well ❤️😊 4y
Caterina @Megabooks In the audiobook I'm listening to (tagged), I literally just encountered the (minority, very doubtful) argument that the Salem witch trial girls were infected with ergot and that's why they were hysterical! What're the odds of encountering ergot twice in one day in two very different books! 😂 4y
Megabooks @Caterina I had heard that about the witches. Ergot often has hallucinations as a result of ingestion. Humans most encounter it on rye and occasionally wheat. Cows on Dallis grass. I believe it causes staggers is cattle which looks like cows tripping on mushrooms! Enough can kill them, and people too! Thanks! I‘m so glad the surgery is over!! 4y

Listening to some lofi hip hop while I read! Do y'all listen to any music while you read? Lofi hip hop/jazz and a very select group of instrumental music is all I can listen to while studying or reading without getting distracted. Here's what I'm listening to: https://youtu.be/hHW1oY26kxQ

I had a long, fun afternoon exploring and hiking/trail running, so I'm only at 3 hours for the #24b4Monday #readathon so far. Working on more seminary reading now!

Caterina @Crazeedi Thank you Diane!! ❤️❤️🥰🥰 5y
Caterina @cleoh Thank you! I'm starting my Master of Divinity at Lutheran seminary. 😊 @Lcsmcat I don't think the Lutheran church uses the term postulant, so I'm not sure what it means. I'm an MDiv student and I'm in the early stages of the candidacy process towards being a Minister of Word and Service /deacon in the ELCA! 5y
Lcsmcat @Caterina Sorry - because you‘re in Berkeley I thought Episcopal. A Postulant in the Episcopal church is headed towards the priesthood, rather than the perpetual diaconate, or an academic MDiv. (You still get an MDiv, but you‘ve jumped through more hoops and gotten sponsored by a parish and a bishop.) 5y
Caterina @Lcsmcat I'll be in some classes with Episcopalians! My seminary is part of the Graduate Theological Union. Hmm well for the ELCA both pastors and deacons get MDivs and have 1 year of internship and have to go through the same long candidacy process through our synods (like dioceses) and get ordained. 5y
Lcsmcat @Caterina That‘s very similar, which isn‘t surprising since we‘re in full communion. 😀 5y
Caterina @Lcsmcat Cool! Yeah I actually know some fellow seminarians who came here from combined Episcopal/ELCA churches. 😊 5y
