Mayhem
Mayhem | Sarah Pinborough
"A compulsively readable story that starts as a conventional murder mystery and morphs, by degrees, into a horrifying supernatural thriller," The Guardian said of Mayhem. A virtuoso fantasy writer, Sarah Pinborough has won numerous awards including the British Fantasy Award for Best Short Story. In Mayhem Pinborough turns her attention to one of the most baffling and notorious crime sprees in Victorian times. Already frustrated in their attempts to capture serial murderer Jack the Ripper, the detectives of Scotland Yard are suddenly confronted with a new monster, dubbed the Torso Killer for his habit of leaving behind neatly wrapped parcels of his victims' body parts, minus the heads. With the terrible increase in mutilated corpses to examine, the highly regarded police surgeon Dr. Thomas Bond has lost the ability to sleep. True, a growing dependency on opium affords him some solace in his loneliest and most desperate hours, but he also fears the grip of the drug. During Dr. Bond's nightly tours of London's underbelly in search of pharmaceutical respite from the horrors that plague him by day, he encounters a mysterious Jesuit priest scouring the opium dens himself, clearly in search of someone--or something. The doctor at first rejects the strange priest's unnatural theories about the Torso Killer as an affront to scientific thought. But over time Dr. Bond's opium-addled mind begins to crumble under the growing impression that there might be some awful truth to the Jesuit's ideas. As the police struggle to capture two serial killers, the troubled forensics expert begins to suspect that he may actually know the Torso Killer personally. If he is right, Dr. Bond will need all the strength he can muster to save his small circle of loved ones from falling victim to the bloody depravities of this twisted creature.

Mehso-so

Pinborough uses the real life Thames Torso Murders for her story, but gives it a supernatural spin.
I did not find this ‘wholly absorbing‘ as the blurb indicates. It wasn‘t boring, but it never grabbed me and I don‘t think I will pick up the second book. This is the third book I have read recently sit in 1800s England basically and that might have impacted my feelings on this one, but I don‘t think so.

#weekendreading

I‘m trying to wrap-up the tagged book today. Then I need to take a break from the mid to late 1800s in England as this is the third book set in that place and period I have read recently. I‘m feeling a little saturated, lol.

Andrew65 When you finish it, welcome back to the future 🤣 2y

Whitechapel. Victorian England. Chasing Jack the Ripper....what about these things is there not to love. Well, I got all of the above and a bit more. In Mayhem, we get a tale spun around a different set of murders happening in London at the same time that the Ripper is active. The Thames Torso Murders - Pinborough‘s story telling mix‘s history and the supernatural to give you a fast pace and wonderful read. This book was well worth my time.

After being so disappointed in my last read I decided that maybe getting back to my comfort zone would be best. So I dusted off Mayhem. It‘s been on my shelves for about 8 months or so....

First reaction: THIS IS GOOD. I hope the author keeps up the pace and tension throughout. I‘m only three chapters in but I like it. #books #murder #london

I‘m calling it. 68% done with this and I just have no motivation to continue with it. I started this back in October and haven‘t touched it since then. I think the pacing overall was too slow to keep me interested coupled with the fact that...nothing was really happening...231 pages in and I was just waiting for something...anything...Shame because it has a pretty cover. Oh well, onto the next!

As much as I love Fall/Winter, the darkness so early is really putting a damper on my reading time. What do I do now while I wait for my physical therapy appt? 🙄😪

That‘s it. I‘ve officially had it. If anyone needs me I‘ll be locked in my room reading about murder with the music turned up.

Symphonic/Heavy Metal and Jack the Ripper-esque murders go well together right? 🙄

Is it weird that I try to read my books in the order I acquired them because to not do so is unfair to the other books? #mybookcase

If Victorian thrillers are your thing, you‘ll probably enjoy this. I get bored with the stereotypical characters. #litsyatoz #p
