The Good Mother | Sue Miller
9 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
Recently divorced, Anna Dunlap has two passionate attachments: her daughter, four-year-old Molly, and her lover, Leo, the man who makes her feel beautiful -- and sexual -- for the first time. Swept away by happiness and passion, Anna feels she has everything she's ever wanted. Then come the shocking charges that would threaten her new love, her new "family" ... that force her to prove she is a good mother.

Adult on child sexual abuse is a hard pass for me, especially if that‘s what the whole second half is going to revolve around. DNF at 52%. #doublespin 💔😢

TheAromaofBooks Sounds like a good decision 😕 5mo
Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks yeah ☹️ 5mo

Suet624 There were just so many things I disliked about this book but I would have to write an essay to explain my issues with the book. 5mo
Megabooks @Suet624 I felt like she was punished for enjoying sex. Like she‘s gotten her groove back but boom that makes her a horrible, thoughtless mother all of a sudden. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 5mo
Suet624 That‘s it EXACTLY but I wasn‘t sure how to put that into words. It really pissed me off. I was a single mom when I read the book and I felt as though the book was saying I was a bad mother if I found a guy who actually liked my child too. And no sex for me until my daughter moved out of the house. 5mo
Megabooks @Suet624 right? At first I kind of liked her portrayal of an amicable divorce, but just because a man gets along with your child and satisfies you sexually doesn‘t automatically make him creepy or with ill intent. 🙄 it really sent the wrong message. 5mo
Suet624 I‘m so glad to hear you say all this. I figured I was the only one who felt this way. 5mo

My #bookspin and #doublespin, and some of the other books I‘m choosing from. I‘m thinking of doing a bingo board for the first time in months, too!

I‘m already ⅓ into Good Mother, which is a #roll100 choice, and Lake House is for #AuthorAMonth! 👍🏻🎉

Caryl I love your rainbow of books! 📚 5mo

Here are the books I‘d like to get to for this year‘s last #roll100. The bottom three are audiobooks. I was hoping for some Sue Miller! So far, I‘ve finished 29 books and DNFed a few more. 👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks @PuddleJumper !! 😁❄️

Suet624 Years ago I had a very bad reaction to The Good Mother. :) I wonder how you'll feel about it. 5mo
Megabooks @Suet624 it sounds quite nightmarish from the jacket description. 😬 5mo
Suet624 I was a single mother at the time I read this book ... I'll say more after you read it. 5mo

Pickpick

Anna Dunlap was raised to be a good daughter but she failed to meet her mother's expectations. She fails too at being a good wife when she realizes her marriage is empty. What remains is to be a good mother, but that is also called into question after Anna develops a passionate relationship & must fight for custody of her daughter. A patient & careful character study that exposes the brutal sterility at the core of trying to be a good [blank].

merelybookish I read this for #192025 and thought its representation of divorce and single parenting might feel dated. And it did in some ways, although maybe not as much as I would have hoped. Also what it means to be a 'good' woman still feels relevant. @Librarybelle 6mo

Anna and Brian decide to divorce with Anna retaining custody of Molly. When Anna later gets involved with Leo and starts to blossom sexually in a way she never did before, a sequence of events takes place revealing the hypocrisy of the treatment of women in our society. I thought this was really good. Miller focuses in on just a few characters in a way that really works.

Soubhiville I usually enjoy her writing too. 2y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville After this one and Monogamy, I‘m a true believer! She seems to like to explore human relationships, good, bad, and ugly, and I like that. I‘ll definitely be looking for more from her. 2y
