Civil War: A Narrative: Volume 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville
Civil War: A Narrative: Volume 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville | Shelby Foote
"I have never read a better, more vivid, more understandable account of the savage battling between Grant's and Lee's armies.... Foote stays with the human strife and suffering, and unlike most Southern commentators, he does not take sides. In objectivity, in range, in mastery of detail in beauty of language and feeling for the people involved, this work surpasses anything else on the subject.... It stands alongside the work of the best of them."-- "New Republic"

I devoured all three volumes a few years ago. Foote has his faults, but this collection is a must for any person interested in the Civil War. The time put into this collection—the research...it‘s such a great resource.

Like most whose lineage straddles both federal and butternut, and separated from America‘s worst nightmare by three generations, I was introduced to Shelby Foote by Ken Burns via the 1990 PBS documentary The Civil War. His pride in the sons of the South, and his gratitude for their defeat, transform military tedium into familial lore.

In spite of what some of my neighbors think about "the late unpleasantness" and how many pickups fly the confederate flag, #itshistory people. We lost. ? #anditsaugust @RealLifeReading

Sace There's a house near mine that flies the US flag and right under it the confederate flag. Not sure if they understand the contradiction. 🤔 7y
Lcsmcat @RestlessFickleBookSlut At least the confederate flag is underneath the American one? 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y
Sace @Lcsmcat lol. Yeah. That's what I tell myself. 7y

"Lincoln had maneuvered them into the position of having either to back down on their threats or else to fire the first shot of the war."

I may have underestimated the commitment it's going to take to read the whole trilogy (the other two are just as long!)...but the writing is beautiful and engaging, and I'll be in Gettysburg in a month, so there's some motivation.

Titania Oh, Shelby Foote. Be still my heart. Such a gentleman. 8y
DreesReads I took a seminar on the Civil War way back when. Yup, I was a history major! I used to be well read on this subject, I am sure I am out of date now! 8y
SerialReader Amazing list, thank you!! 👍👍👍 8y
Twocougs @Liberty I love your pictures of your stacks and stacks of books. 8y

MrCoachU One of my favorite things about Ken Burns' Civil War documentary was getting to hear Shelby Foote talk. Perfection!! 8y
Amanda1 I live in East Atlanta and there are Civil War markers everywhere. The monument marking where McPherson was killed is a block from my house: https://instagram.com/p/9PJVi7IuUt/ 8y
Liberty @Amanda1 In October I am making my first trip south, to Richmond, to nerd out over CW history. Maybe some day I'll make it to Atlanta! 8y
Windy @Amanda1 I am not that far from you, I live in Columbus. I just love living in a place with such important history. We have a civil war naval museum that is one of my favorite stops in the city. 8y
MilitaryHistory75 I have the entire 3 volume series. Shelby Foote is my "hero" as far as historians go. Actually working on my civil war degree. 8y
denise Nice!! I visited Gettysburg over the 4th of July long weekend and I've been on a Civil War kick ever since! Thanks for putting this together! 8y
