Cheer Up Love Further Adventures of the Crab of Hate
Cheer Up Love Further Adventures of the Crab of Hate | Susan Calman
12 posts | 14 read | 10 to read
Susan Calman has depression and she's not alone in that. Despite being one of the funniest women in the UK (OK, the world) she has had her own black dog, the Crab of Hate, whispering in her ear since she can remember. And her answer? To talk about it. A woman who measures the length of her depression by box sets (Cracker good, West Wing bad) and who has made therapy more of a hobby than a medical requirement, Susan has written the book on what's it's like to be gloomy and enjoy it. Certain that the world needs people with a more cynical outlook on life, the book is a celebration of what she, and if statistics are to be believed, one in four of us, go through daily. Cheer Up Love is a survivor's guide to modern life on the dark side.

“The only time I‘ve ever genuinely wondered if I could develop a super power was when I was bitten on the left breast by a guinea pig... I sat in the dark for hours waiting for my special abilities to appear, Susan Calman Guinea Pig Woman! I have no idea what would happen if I became such a hybrid hero. I understand that these furry rodents eat their own feces, so that was something to look forward to.”

My GP with his bum in his food bowl. 🤣

#NonFictionNovember

About unpleasant people on the internet:

“There are some horrible, nasty people in the world who delight in making other people unhappy... if you were at a party and there was an obviously aggressive dickhead there, would you try to engage them? Would you earnestly try to explain why they were wrong or would you instead spend your time with people who don‘t make you feel like shit?”

Good advice.

MicheleinPhilly Seriously. I‘ve never understood why people take the time to engage with trolls. 4y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly @Libby1 exactly! If you were in the pub you‘d just walk away. 4y
MicheleinPhilly @TrishB The sad thing is that I feel the vast majority of these people would never behave that way in a pub (or anywhere else IRL.) It‘s the anonymity that empowers them. 4y

TrishB @MicheleinPhilly so true 😕 4y
Libby1 @MicheleinPhilly , @TrishB - you‘re both so right. My husband argues with people on the internet and I‘m just like 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️. 4y
TrishB I have to admit I am having to have words with myself everyday at the moment not to get involved in political arguments....but it just doesn‘t do any good !! 4y
Libby1 @TrishB - you‘re absolutely right. Your peace of mind is more important than giving a piece of your mind! 🤣 4y
TrishB Oh Libby I love that! My new strap line 😘 4y

Pickpick

I like Susan Calman and enjoyed this book, if one can say they “enjoy“ a book about depression. Susan's experiences with paranoia and anxiety in particular resonated strongly with me -- are we twins? I think I'm going to have to get the audio of this, read by the author, for a re-read.

Started listening to this yesterday while making notebooks. Using it for the ‘cover has photo element‘ prompt (I‘ve finished the auror prompts, now I‘m strategically adding for other career paths). #newts2019 #newtsreadathon2019

Jess7 Anything written by Fredrik Backman is my goto feel good type book. Also maybe something light like a Rainbow Rowell Book would be good. I‘ll tag @britt_brooke for more suggestions. 🤗🤗 (((hugs))) 6y
Kalalalatja I really loved the Fairyland series by Catherynne Valente. It is a children‘s series, but there‘s so much for adults to enjoy, and it definitely gave me a lot of good feelings! Hope you feel better 💕 6y

BeckyK @Kalalalatja Aww I love that title. Thank you 😊 6y
britt_brooke @Jess7 Thanks - and I agree Backman and Rowell are good suggestions. I‘d also say Robin Sloan‘s books, especially Mr. Penumbra, though Sourdough is good, too. 84, Charing Cross Road is very charming and heart-warming. I recently enjoyed When Dimple Met Rishi. Sending hugs @Beckykearns ❣️❣️ 6y

I've woken on many nights silently screaming as a result of that outfit. No wonder. I looked like Penelope Pitstop if she'd been squashed in an industrial accident.

Just finished a really disturbing novel/audiobook and now looking for something cheerful(?) to read. Maybe this will do the trick. My attempt at cream of celery soup turned into more of a 🥕 and 🥔 bisque but still 😋! #bookandlunch
