Annotated Wuthering Heights
Annotated Wuthering Heights | Emily Brontë
10 posts | 18 read | 3 to read
Emily Bronte s "Wuthering Heights" has been called the most beautiful, most profoundly violent love story of all time. At its center are Catherine and Heathcliff, and the self-contained world of Wuthering Heights, Thrushcross Grange, and the wild Yorkshire moors that the characters inhabit. I "am" Heathcliff, Catherine declares. In her introduction Janet Gezari examines Catherine s assertion and in her notes maps it to questions that flicker like stars in the novel s dark dreamscape. How do we determine who and what we are? What do the people closest to us contribute to our sense of identity?"""""The Annotated Wuthering Heights" provides those encountering the novel for the first time as well as those returning to it with a wide array of contexts in which to read Bronte s romantic masterpiece. Gezari explores the philosophical, historical, economic, political, and religious contexts of the novel and its connections with Bronte s other writing, particularly her poems. The annotations unpack Bronte s allusions to the Bible, Shakespeare, and her other reading; elucidate her references to topics including folklore, educational theory, and slavery; translate the thick Yorkshire dialect of Joseph, the surly, bigoted manservant at the Heights; and help with other difficult or unfamiliar words and phrases.Handsomely illustrated with many color images that vividly recreate both Bronte s world and the earlier Yorkshire setting of her novel, this newly edited and annotated text will delight and instruct the scholar and general reader alike."

Heathcliffe is such a #jealousguy. And an all round terrible person. #NoFemmeBer @cinfen @Billypar

Cinfhen He seems to be winning the #jealousguy award 🙌🻠6y
Moray_Reads @Cinfhen he's definitely the (un)popular choice! 6y
saresmoore Why is it that your post makes me want to read WH immediately? I just love her unlikeable characters! 6y

Moray_Reads @saresmoore ironic, considering I hate the thing! 😂 6y
saresmoore I know you do! There must be some latent defiance in me. 🙃 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore you're just remedying my deficiencies as a reader. I suppose SOMEONE should read it 😉 6y
LeahBergen @Moray_Reads @saresmoore And now you two are making me feel like a reread. I‘m questioning my love of it. 😂😂 6y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen I don't deny it's a great work of literature and that Emily Brontë was a genius, maybe even more so than her sisters. But I still hate it. 6y
rubyslippersreads @Moray_Reads @saresmoore I‘m feeling the same way as @LeahBergen I‘ve read it many times, but not lately, and wonder if a reread will change my feelings. 6y
RohitSawant Perfect pick! 🙌🽠6y

My favorite! Not for everyone, but enjoyable for folks who like atmosphere and awful characters.

Ughhhhh this book. I was impressed by the story (a lodger narrator hearing a story through a servant who sometimes heard things secondhand), and it was moving, but DAMN talk about unlikeable characters. Could've done without all the dog murders and abuse, as well. But parts of it were beautiful, and this edition's illustrations and annotations really helped explain the historical context.

SusanInTiburon Right?! It's a heck of a book, deserves its reputation for greatness, but for the life of me I can't see it as a love story. I'd title it "Heathcliff's Revenge." 8y
CynCruz23 @SusanInTiburon agree - the "love story" is honestly psychotic and unhealthy but makes for a great read ? 8y
bookwrm526 Hmm, thanks for the comments about the dog murders...I've been trying to force myself to read this one for a long time, and have never managed to get past thirty pages - this gives me another reason not to bother!! 8y
sneirr I was so amazed when I read this because from the way people talked about it I thought it would be romantic! I've never read a story like this where every single character is unlikeable... Still a great book though 😠8y

quirkyreader If it's the book published by Harvard Press you are very lucky to have found it. 8y
HardcoverHarlot @quirkyreader it is! I ordered it for my library 8y
Mamashep I appreciate the writing. I just hate the characters and can never understand why it's considered such a great love story. Some seriously abusive behavior going on. 8y
quirkyreader After reading it you are going to want your own copy. That happened with me and The Harvard edition of Frankenstein. 8y
