Bailedbailed

Call me a prude but second chapter in was content that I just couldn‘t get through. R@p€ and SA are just not things I enjoy reading about and this was pretty graphic. I get that‘s a me thing and for others it might be no issue, but for myself and my own MH I‘m best to out this down and try something different.

ShyBookOwl I've always struggled with rape scenes and the older I get the less interested I am in powering through. I bail 99% of the time now. 1y
Darklunarose @ShyBookOwl im the same. For me that‘s an autostop and I just move on to something a lot nicer. 1y
MissHel I‘ve started hunting down content warnings for SA. I can‘t deal with it anymore. 1y

mamareading I was thinking the other day that if there is a rape science in every book then we‘re reading graphic rape scenes & SA multiple times a week and that doesn‘t sound like a great idea. I balance that with very real experiences and raising awareness… Still, I personally need a break. 1y
CollapsingLibrary While in college I struggled to understand why I‘d find some SA scenes in books okay & others upsetting. Then a girl in my class explained that she was tired of men writing scenes of women being SA by men & it could almost always be removed from the plot entirely anyways & it was a complete lightbulb moment for me. Now I typically bail on books with male authors that have SA scenes because I never enjoy them & it feels like lazy writing to me. 1y
Darklunarose @CollapsingLibrary that‘s the way I also view movies. It‘s often not needed. In this case it‘s a gay man who is with someone who refuses to listen and causes harm. I just cannot read through it. 1y
Darklunarose @mamareading needing a break makes sense. When faced with things that are dark and harmful there is only so much a human can cope with 1y
Darklunarose @MissHel there is a brilliant brilliant app for movies called “does the dog die” and it‘s been a godsend in my home. My husband can‘t cope with animal abuse and I have a few things I can not watch. We need an app like this…for books. 1y

Some reading and an afternoon snack. I have to admit this book is way way more erotic then I normally pick up.

Stunning prose, Greenwell is certainly a poet. I enjoyed the setting and protagonist. I appreciate the writing but some of the plot was too much for me.

A worthy follow-up to his last book, What Belongs to You. A nameless narrator, an American teaching English in Bulgaria, dates various men, falls in love, and then is alone again. It‘s a series of linked vignettes more than a linear novel, but it works. I most loved the one where he in in Italy with his boyfriend, and the one where he goes out drinking with two former students. Really beautiful writing all around.

BarbaraBB I enjoyed this one a lot too. 4y

An American teacher navigates love, sex & a wild night out in Sofia. This was excellent. The stories link up & work as a ‘song cycle‘ (Greenwell‘s description). I love his prose & ability to bring rhythm & suspense into each sentence. He controls the tension masterfully so the writing propels you forward. He illuminates the everyday experiences of living as a gay man in Sofia with crystal clear writing, compassion & restraint. Recommended.

This is is a melancholic book about an American man who lives in #Bulgaria. The book consists of 3 parts of which the middle is about the time with his lover R. In the 1st and the 3rd part he lives without R but all he does and thinks seems related to R in a way. Even the most rough and explicit sex scenes feel like atonement, blaming, or sadness. Very well done.

Literature with a capital L with plenty of explicit and violent gay sex. What's not to like?!

A novel comprised of chapters that could be read as short stories, all set in Sofia, Bulgaria around an American professor who is about to leave after years abroad and is reflecting on what these years have given him. A queer student's confessions, sexual encounters, and activism against the extreme homophobia that haunts the country are all characters in this brilliant text about the challenges of defining the self and how we inhabit ourselves.

ephemeralwaltz TW for very explicit (pretty hard-core) sexual content. 4y
ephemeralwaltz @Cinfhen chapter 8 WAS intense! I just thought it was brilliantly written, albeit a bit too much. I don't think I've read such good writing about explixit sex. 4y
ephemeralwaltz Explicit* 4y
Cinfhen It was really beautifully written but chapter 8 was rough!!!!! I still gave the book a pick because it was so well done. He‘s an excellent storyteller too. 4y

My #ReadingEurope2020 #Bulgaria pick was quite gorgeous if at times uncomfortable & slightly more erotic than I‘m used to. An American who‘s gay, living & teaching in Bulgaria, shares memories that occurred as he traverses daily life.
Interconnected stories that capture pain, hope, shame, loneliness, longing and desire. Dark & disturbing but often beautiful. It‘s narrated by the author which lends another level to the gritty text. 👇🏼

Cinfhen If you liked Call Me By Your Name and On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous, I think you‘ll appreciate this book. It‘s a little raw and extremely explicit at times. Maybe don‘t listen to the audio out loud with the kids around 😉Very graphic and heavy with profanity ‼️‼️‼️ 4y
Librarybelle Great review! 4y

Cinfhen Thanks @Librarybelle I was a little conflicted because one part was VERY GRAPHIC 😳 4y
squirrelbrain Sounds lovely, although I‘ve already read #bulgaria, stacking anyway. 4y
TrishB 😂😂😂 4y
BarbaraBB I am intrigued now 😂 4y
Hooked_on_books His first one is also graphic. I often dislike that, but it worked in the book, I felt. 4y
Cinfhen I know eventually you‘ll both read the book and you‘ll let me know if it felt excessive and overly explicit. @Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I got through the sex bondage chapter fine but for some reason chapter 8 just left me uncomfortable 🥵 4y
BarbaraBB I‘ll let you know. I don‘t mind explicitness but it should have a function / add something to the story imo. 4y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I completely agree. When it‘s gratuitous, it just makes me mad. 4y
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Me too and that‘s why I understand you didn‘t like The Pisces and why I was surprised I did! 4y
ephemeralwaltz Currently reading this and so curious about chapter 8 after reading your comments! 😂😂 While uncomfortable, the bondage chapter was extraordinarily written, I could feel the character's oscillation between comfort and discomfort. 4y
Cinfhen Let me know how you feel when you get to chapter 8 @ephemeralwaltz 😂😂I agree, the bondage chapter while uncomfortable was written with beauty and grace 4y

WOW😳 This is a little dark and unsettling #ReadingEurope2020 #Bulgaria 🎧#Scribd

Librarybelle It‘s rainy weather at my house today - sounds like that book fits the gloomy, spooky mood! 4y
Cinfhen It‘s not spooky @Librarybelle but VERY GLOOMY / it‘s six vignettes that feature repressed memories of a gay American English teacher as he finds himself living in a communist state. He engages in secret illicit BDSM acts 4y
BarbaraBB My choice for Bulgaria too! Waiting for my copy to arrive! 4y

Cinfhen It‘s dark but the writing is good @BarbaraBB I think you‘ll be ok with the content but this book won‘t appeal to everyone. Did you read his first book?? 4y
BarbaraBB No I didn‘t. I read about this one on this website where @MicheleinPhilly always picks her new books (forgot its name) and immediately bought it when I read it‘s about Bulgaria 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
Cinfhen I didn‘t read the first book either but it doesn‘t seem to matter @BarbaraBB 4y
BarbaraBB I know @Hooked_on_books read it and enjoyed it. So maybe I will. Cleanness first though. 4y

Listened to Garth Greenwell talk about his book Cleanness, on Books and Authors by BBC Radio 4.

"As an artist I am drawn to extremes. I am drawn to writing ecstasy or writing despair, but you know, i wanted to write something in the middle, where most of us live most of our lives. I wanted to write the wonder of the ordinary happiness, the very unremarkable happiness of being in love."

Suet624 It‘s a hard thing to do. I agree that most books gave such extremes. 4y

Extraordinary prose. This is kind of like interlinked short stories, about a teacher in Sofia and the impact a relationship with a man, R. , has on him during this time. I wish I could see Greenwell in person speak about his writing. He's a genius IMO.

This book was so introspective and melancholy, though not depressing. About an American man living and teaching in Sofia, Bulgaria and the people he meets there. Some of the scenes were a bit unsettling, but not without purpose. Overall the prose was so beautiful. I would have kept reading if there had been more to read.

Much like Garth Greenwell's last novel, What Belongs to You, which I admit I never finished, the narrator feels like the author sharing stories from his time teaching English in Bulgaria. In a few he is quite young, some are during revolution, and in some he is older (but the narrator is the same.) ⤵️

ReadingEnvy His (very explicit and often challenging) sexual encounters, relationships, and friendships are only with first initials, shrouding all stories in a layer of secrecy that suits the plight of a gay man in Bulgaria. The limits he pushes in risktaking behavior, violence, and so on also manage to show how perhaps Americans also aren't as free as they think they are, and how deeply we internalize homophobic narratives and more. 4y
Reggie I didn‘t finish his first one either. There‘s a booktuber who reviewed this also and his first sentence was,‘I‘m here to bring you a review of a book that is a tale as old as time, which is about sad gay men.‘ Lololol. He liked it but I don‘t know.... you almost have me convinced. 4y
ReadingEnvy @Reggie I was between a soso and a like. Talking it over with someone else helped me see more in it but you have to be willing to go on his journey. 4y

Gay erotica but with the beautiful written prose that dares display human connections, experiences, and blunt sexuality. The story is told through an unnamed American narrator who is teaching college in Sofia, Bulgaria. Here, he explores his desires and carnal wantoness through various encounters that is both scary, empty, sad, joyous, and at times meaningful. This is certainly not for the prudish but a voyeuistic view of human psychology.

This is Garth Greenwell‘s second novel and this one is just as surreal as the first. He is a poet at heart and it definitely comes through when he transitions to novels.

I don't think it's an understatement to say that Garth Greenwell is one of our greatest living prose stylists. But I think that's selling this book short, because focusing only on the beauty of this writing misses what it says about human connection. The way Greenwell uses the erotic as a means of exploring the need for connection, and different types of connection, and connection with self, is pretty amazing, I think.
