Dear Audiobook Producers and Narrators,
In Canadian English, the word “toque” or “tuque” doesn‘t rhyme with “joke”, like something you might smoke, around midnight à la Steve Miller Band. It rhymes with “Luke”, as in, “Hey, Luke, nice toque. I lost one just like it - what a fluke.”
I had to abandon the above #audiobook due to this mispronunciation - as it takes place in the arctic, the headwear in question comes up quite often.
Best,
-KVanRead

Bookish.SAM 🤣🤣🤣 this sounds like a completely legit reason to abandon an audiobook. That would have driven me crazy! (edited) 4y
Lindy @Bookish.SAM @KVanRead That kind of thing drives me nuts too. Tuque is such a common word in Canada; easy to check. 4y

rabbitprincess Jeez, they need to do their research, eh! (edited) 4y
Read-y_Picker Uggghhhhh 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I fully support your decision! (Sorry) 4y
MsMelissa I understand this. I listened to an audiobook where the author kept pronouncing the name for the city of Regina like the female name Regina and it drove me bonkers 😠 4y
KVanRead @Bookish.SAM @Lindy @rabbitprincess @Read-y_Picker And the hilarious thing is due to the Arctic setting, the word toque is on practically every page! It‘s just “toke, toke, toke” all the time.😂😂😂 4y
KVanRead @Book_Fiend_Melissa ugh 🤦🏻‍♀️ I listened to The Glass Hotel earlier this year and the narrator kept calling a character named Yvette “Yuhvette” -😬 but at least It was a minor character so didn‘t come up much. I‘m surprised the authors don‘t have any oversight- I‘m sure they would want to correct this stuff. 4y
LeahBergen Noooo!! 😂😂😂 4y
KathyWheeler Mary Kay Andrews sets her books in the American South — usually Georgia. I was listening to one of her books and the narrator said “kudzu” with the first syllable rhyming with “dude” instead of “dud”. There‘s a lot of kudzu in the South and hearing it pronounced like that nearly drove me nuts! 4y
Hooked_on_books I am driven crazy by mispronunciations in audiobooks! If it‘s a word here or there, I can deal, but a main word to the narrative is sooooo frustrating. 4y
KVanRead @LeahBergen @KathyWheeler @Hooked__on__books The struggle is real!!! Back when I was in journalism school mispronunciation was an automatic‘F‘ - guess these audiobook producers don‘t have that high a standard 😌 4y
KathyWheeler @KVanRead To me there‘s not an excuse to not know how to pronounce something now that there‘s the internet. If you aren‘t sure about a pronunciation, just look up how to pronounce the word and there‘s audio for it! When I taught in grad school, I gave lessons on how to pronounce my name (maiden name = Pavlakovich) just so I wouldn‘t have to hear it said wrong every single day. (edited) 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira 😳🤪😢🤣 Have you thought about sending an email, for future productions? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘m the kind who does that sometimes 🤦🏻‍♀️😉 4y
KVanRead @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira I‘m the kind that thinks about doing stuff like that but never gets around to it😂😂🤣 4y

Mehso-so

This starts off well and has the makings of a cute, light cozy. I was charmed by the setting and the Robert Service references (my Dad‘s favorite poet). She does a nice job of giving Dawson a weird town vibe with a cast of quirky characters and the freeze up creating a locked-room mystery feel. Unfortunately, it all becomes really ridiculous and not intentionally. This felt like a novel in search of an identity and a better editor as there were⤵️

KVanRead ...several continuity and grammatical errors that drove me nuts. There was also some light racial stereotyping that I was not all down for. 2.5 ⭐️ 4y

KVanRead @vivastory Gah, me too. Subject/verb agreement shouldn‘t be that hard for an editor to see🙄 And continuity stuff - e.g. the red front door is now at the back! - makes me bonkers 😂 4y
Cathythoughts Oh no 🤦🏼‍♀️ 4y
KVanRead @Cathythoughts Yup, fraid so 😬 It wax a quick read though and had some entertaining bits. 4y
MsMelissa You win some, you lose some, right? I think bad writing drives me crazier than a bad plot. 4y

Pickpick

⭐⭐⭐/5 for me. I am between pick and so-so, but it was engaging enough that I ripped through it in a couple of hours. I liked reading about Dawson City, having never been to the Yukon, and thought the author did a good job in giving the reader a true sense of the place during the winter months. I'll give it a pick!

KVanRead Good to know!! 4y

Here‘s my tentative plan for #ReadCanada. Only one off my TBR, sigh 😂

MsMelissa I‘ve read a few of these, and can say you‘ve got some great reading ahead of you. I look forward to your thoughts on the books I haven‘t read. 4y
LeahBergen The Stone Angel ❤️ and The Book of Negroes! 👏🏻 4y
KVanRead @Book_Fiend_Melissa @LeahBergen Yay! Good to know 😊 4y

Canadian.Reads Neat idea! Will follow to see your reviews. I liked Suzanne and am about to read Strange Things Done 4y
KVanRead @Canadian.Reads Cool! I‘ll look forward to your review. If you check out the #ReadCanada Challenge hashtag you‘ll see everybody‘s post for this challenge from @Book_Fiend_Melissa than runs until next July. I still need to get started - keep getting sidetracked by other reads🙄 4y
Canadian.Reads @KVanRead thanks for sharing - will definitely take a look! I know the feeling about getting sidetracked with other reads... but sounds like a reasonable timeline to allow for many distractions! 4y

As Dawson City's egress options close, one by one for the winter, reporter Jo risks getting stuck in the same town as the murderer she's trying to expose. I'm just in love with Wild's prose, her knack for metaphor, her ability to build suspense. She really got to the core of what survival (physical, monetary) in northern communities necessitates. The ending purposefully left a couple of open-ended threads, the last of which is a twist in itself.

BridgetteM This sounds excellent. Added it to my TBR. Thanks! 6y
Tylercaulfield Just added it to my TBR too. 6y
SandyW This sounds like a good book for me in January or February, when the daytime highs here in SoCal "only" reach 68F and I need to be reminded of winter. 6y

One of the most out-of-the-box descriptions of the sky I've ever read: "An egg yolk of a sun was beginning to bleed into a pan of dark cloud like a Northern fry-up."

Pickpick

So between a pick and a so-so. I found the reveal at the end disappointing. Rushed and closed up too quickly. 3 🌟🌟🌟 but...I do want to read more from this author and I do want to find out more about Jo Silver. Will she stay in Dawson or will she go to Toronto?

So, I'm going to dig into this one instead of A Gentleman in Moscow. It's due back to the library, and this thick read is more of a character study told in a fine and gentlemanly pace. I need to be in the mood to truly savour that. I'm going to check out Costco next weekend and buy the book instead. For now, it's off to Strange Things Done. 😀
