Pickpick

As Dawson City's egress options close, one by one for the winter, reporter Jo risks getting stuck in the same town as the murderer she's trying to expose. I'm just in love with Wild's prose, her knack for metaphor, her ability to build suspense. She really got to the core of what survival (physical, monetary) in northern communities necessitates. The ending purposefully left a couple of open-ended threads, the last of which is a twist in itself.

BridgetteM This sounds excellent. Added it to my TBR. Thanks! 14mo
Tylercaulfield Just added it to my TBR too. 14mo
SandyW This sounds like a good book for me in January or February, when the daytime highs here in SoCal "only" reach 68F and I need to be reminded of winter. 14mo

One of the most out-of-the-box descriptions of the sky I've ever read: "An egg yolk of a sun was beginning to bleed into a pan of dark cloud like a Northern fry-up."

So between a pick and a so-so. I found the reveal at the end disappointing. Rushed and closed up too quickly. 3 🌟🌟🌟 but...I do want to read more from this author and I do want to find out more about Jo Silver. Will she stay in Dawson or will she go to Toronto?

Okay kids. Went back to work so the time available to read has been slipping away! I'm going to read tonight! Just read!

So, I'm going to dig into this one instead of A Gentleman in Moscow. It's due back to the library, and this thick read is more of a character study told in a fine and gentlemanly pace. I need to be in the mood to truly savour that. I'm going to check out Costco next weekend and buy the book instead. For now, it's off to Strange Things Done. 😀
