so-so

Meh. This was ok.
Riggle is 17, his dad died several years ago in an accident driving his rig, and his mom never recovered from her depression. So now he lives with his uncle who is addicted to many substances in a small town he calls Opioid Indiana. But his uncle goes missing, they‘re about to get evicted, and the poor kid can‘t catch a break.

Interesting, a quick read, but I can‘t say I‘d recommend it.

Having grown up in Indiana, I was curious about this book. It does a good job with the atmospherics of a small town south of Indianapolis. Riggle is well written and reminds me a bit of Holden Caulfield. Overall, it was a fun read.

I picked this up on my trip to Book People with @Mitch . Now I‘m wondering if I should have checked Litsy reviews before buying it- they‘re not so good. It sounded good to me from the blurb though, so I‘m looking forward to it anyway. 🤷‍♀️

I liked the main character‘s story, but the bits about how the days of the week got their names just ruined it for me. They‘re done in an annoying accent on the audiobook. Not sure I would have liked it better in print.

Listening to an advanced libro.fm copy based on @Megabooks ‘s review. So far it throws Indiana around a lot but doesn‘t feel like it fully illustrates rural Indiana beyond cliche (despite the comparing every winter to the blizzard of ‘78). Also it talks about getting snow days when a lot of Indiana schools now utilize e-learning days for weather.

Megabooks And having lived in Southern Indiana in this decade and growing up in northwestern Kentucky, there is not nearly as much snow now as in the 80s in general. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #climatechange 5y

Megabooks @mdemanatee I feel like there is a book on the deindustrialization and subsequent poverty and opioid addiction of the working class in the Midwest, but this wasn‘t it. I felt like the book I‘m tagging was a mess too, but some people liked it. It was sort of going for a similar goal.

Megabooks Honestly, the best book I‘ve read tying these things together is the nonfiction I just read for the third time.

I wouldn‘t say it‘s the worst book I‘ve ever finished, but it‘s pretty damn close. If listening to a 17 year-old boy‘s stream-of-consciousness thoughts about post-Trump rural Indiana is your wheelhouse, then try it, but even for trying to do that well, I wasn‘t impressed. Just a bunch of random nonsense!

Megabooks @ravenlee There are a number of authors that are trying to explain (or IMO mansplain) the Trump victory, resurgent white supremacy, and the opioid crisis in the Midwest in a novel. I haven‘t found any I‘ve tried satisfying. 5y

Megabooks @Amandajoy @lele1432 the author did a really good job of making it the ramblings of a 17 year old, and I just felt it went nowhere, but not in a profound way. It was a 4 hour audiobook and after 3 I would‘ve bailed if it were longer. 5y

Megabooks @mdemanatee it‘s one of the more rural/broken down suburban areas around Indy because they talk about area code 317. I read it because I used to live in a bad part near Evansville and thought I‘d find parts relatable, but I didn‘t. Of anyone on Litsy, I‘d encourage you to read it. Maybe I‘m wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️ my ego isn‘t quite large enough to believe I can‘t be. 🤣😉 5y

Opioid, Indiana is the story of Riggle an orphaned teenager who lives with his uncle in an unnamed city in Indiana. The story takes place in the span of one week, when Riggle gets suspended from school for a week for something he did not do. But hey, he is a teenager so he really does not care about missing school.
