The second book by prize-winning Japanese novelist Fuminori Nakamura to be available in English translation, a follow-up to 2012's critically acclaimed The Thief?another fantastically creepy, electric literary thriller that explores the limits of human depravity?and the powerful human instinct to resist evil. When Fumihiro Kuki is eleven years old, his elderly, enigmatic father calls him into his study for a meeting. "I created you to be a cancer on the world," his father tells him. It is a tradition in their wealthy family: a patriarch, when reaching the end of his life, will beget one last child to cause misery in a world that cannot be controlled or saved. From this point on, Fumihiro will be specially educated to learn to create as much destruction and unhappiness in the world around him as a single person can. Between his education in hedonism and his family's resources, Fumihiro's life is one without repercussions. Every door is open to him, for he need obey no laws and may live out any fantasy he might have, no matter how many people are hurt in the process. But as his education progresses, Fumihiro begins to question his father's mandate, and starts to resist. From the Hardcover edition.

Finished Dimple Hill (in Pilgrimage), re-read The Expendable Man, read Evil and the Mask and continued with Century of the Wind and Anniversaries. Also reading Her Body and Other Parties as well as Bad Feminist.

#BookReport Whew! That is a lot of books for me, as I usually read one at a time!

JenniferP So close on Pilgrimage! I'm very curious to hear your thoughts on it!

Megabooks Nice! Love the quote and the picture! 🖖🏻🖖🏻 5y
Megabooks I‘m sorry I didn‘t comment earlier. I spent most of the afternoon dealing with the GI doc. 👎🏻👎🏻 5y
LiterRohde @Megabooks Never even thought about it. I know what dealing with doctors is like because of my disability. And on top of dealing with specialists since birth for spina bifida, I have had GI issues for like 15-20 years that no one can figure out. I just suffer in silence. Like yesterday when I spent a majority of the day in the bathroom. Thankful for my smartphone on days like that. Anyway, all that to say, no worries, I get it. Hope all is well. 5y
Megabooks @LiterRohde I‘m so sorry you deal with that. I was fairly healthy until I was in a car accident at 17, but my adult health at time has been a train wreck. As far as GI stuff, I have celiac disease and eosinophilic esophagitis. The latter is where I‘m having problems. I‘ve been sneezing after dinner then vomiting. No one I‘ve talked to at my GI doctor has seen this, so I‘m getting scoped for the third time in a year. 👎🏻👎🏻 👇🏻👇🏻 5y
Megabooks I hate that you don‘t know what‘s wrong GI-wise! It was so frustrating before I got these diagnoses. It truly sucks to be sick and not know when or what could make you better. Hang in there, friend! 💜 5y

Pickpick

This book was a dark, disturbing and introspective look at the nature of good, evil, fate and redemption. The most unsettling aspect of this book was how much it did not say or do. Some of the worst things that happen in the book are only briefly observed in the periphery, are recalled after by characters or are manifested in the actions and behaviors of characters. Instead of seeing all the destruction, you feel its effects.

Jess I like dark books but, yikes, this one sounds rough. Adding it to the stack. 6y
LiterRohde @Jess It was rough, and bleak. Psychological and sexual abuse, rape, murder, war. And while much of it could have been made much more graphic by telling it firsthand, it still is what it is. I hope I am doing the description justice and someone doesn‘t come back to me like, “WTF kind of books are you recommending!” 😳 Am I a desensitized SOB? I hope people realize - a boy raised to be a cancer on the world is not a tiptoe through the tulips. (edited) 6y

A well written meditation on the nature of good and evil. The story of a young man raised to cause destruction, and his attempt to reject his upbringing. I thought this was really interesting.

@Tsubame thank you so much for the secret santa package. I love that the authors are Japanese and both books look really good. The bookmark is gorgeous and my daughter is very excited about the origami paper. The fabric you wrapped the books in is beautiful. Everything is so special and perfect 😊#secretsantagoespostal #wintersolsticebookexchange @BookishMarginalia
