“Amazing Grace” by Mary Hoffman and illustrated by Caroline Binch

Grace is a storyteller at heart with a flair for performance, but will factors out of her control stifle her dream?

RF. SR/RA. #ucflae3414sp21

ToddSalerno This text could be particularly helpful teaching social/emotional learning skills. The themes of following a dream can relate to students. (UDL 9.1-promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation.) The resource uses higher order thinking, challenging the younger K-2 audience to think critically. (ESOL 36- Ask numerous questions which require higher level thinking responses.)

DrSpalding I have seen the learning to give resource and it is fantastic! This is another book that I highlight and use in some of my events. There is so much that could be learned through Grace‘s experiences. You have done a nice job with your genres and understand how to categorize your books appropriately. 3y

This years RAA we read about a little girl named Grace who is told she couldn‘t play Peter Pan in the school play because she is a black girl. Well guess who played lead role and did amazing? This children‘s RF book is great for storytelling and teaching students they can do anything they set their minds to. Check out https://bealearninghero.org/book/amazing-grace/ for extension activities. #ucflae3414sp20

A girl named Grace loves stories, so when her teacher announces they're doing the play “Peter Pan“ Grace gets excited. She wants to play the main character, but her classmates list many reasons why that is not possible. Grace perseveres and auditions, as a result she is chosen for the part of Peter Pan. This book teaches children they can reach their dreams no matter their race, gender, etc.

ShardaeP UDL: 3.1 Activate or supply background knowledge (many text to text connections can be made)
ESOL: Link lesson topic to students' prior knowledge (“Peter Pan“, among other stories are mentioned in this text)
This book can be used during a Read Aloud, following other well known stories or specifically the stories mentioned in “Amazing Grace“

This RF book is a story with a message that all children should hear. It is about a little girl named Grace who wants to be Peter Pan in her schools play. But the other girls and boys say she can‘t because she‘s a girl and she‘s black. In the end, it doesn‘t stop her from becoming the role of her dreams. This is a great book to share to teach children about diversity and inclusion, and would be a great book for R.A.!

MaddyJ http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/talk-about-storie... - a great idea for a lesson plan and extension activity specific for this book! The UDL principle 3.1 to activate or supply background knowledge and ESOL 4 to link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge could be applied when talking about what the students know about Peter Pan and other information before the story even beings. #UCFLAE3414SP20 4y
DrSpalding Beautiful picture. Another great RF TITLE TO USE as a mirror or a window! 4y

This lovely RF and New York Times Best Seller is about being yourself, regardless of what others may think. has great discussion ideas on race and gender roles as Grace wants to play Peter Pan in a play. This would be great for an AS on Mary Hoffman to study the impact this book and the whole “Grace” series has had on people around the world!

hadassajl EL strategy #3 which encourages self-talk would be great for this book along with UDL 9.2 which focuses on facilitating personal coping skills and strategies. #UCFLAE3414SP20 4y
victoriamaria Love this story! I had a lot of fun reading the other day. 4y
DrSpalding You were an amazing Peter Pan Hadassa. Lovely image and excellent alignment selecting the universal design principle that focuses on coping skills and strategies. Grace certainly had to do this in the story. 4y

Amazing Grace was such a cute and inspirational book! It is definitely one of my favorites now. It is a CRF book about a dark skinned girl with a huge imagination wanting to play Peter Pan in her school play but her classmates don‘t believe in her because she isn‘t a boy and doesn‘t look like the ideal Peter Pan. Grace is an iconic character and everyone should read it! I even read it to my boyfriend and puppy tonight. They loved it so much!

AmyPerezCubas I would definitely encourage number 3 with my ESOL students because this books requires positive thinking and all the students need that! For my UDL I would use 6.1 because Grace had a goal and she went for it! The best part about this story is the illustrations, so I would definitely walk my class back through each page of the book for them to talk about it. I would also separate everyone in small groups so they can talk about how to treat 6y
AmyPerezCubas Everyone equally despite Grace‘s mean class 6y

This is an awesome giveaway. I have wanted to answer, but, I could not think of anything till today.

A fellow teacher told me I was a Refrigerator, I light up with ideas, I am always full of wonderful things that my students need. I can cool down hot parents or kiddos. Lol. I help freeze and keep in place my students hopes, dreams and childhood imagination. She made me cry of course. lol

Amazing Grace tells the story about a young girl who knows that she can be whoever she wants to be. This RF picture book is a great tool for RT in a classroom, and it allows for teachers to implement ESOL strategy, 46 and UDL 3.3 and 4.2. #ucflae3414f17

DrSpalding A little more summary and more detail in your strategies. This is a fantastic realistic fiction title! 6y
