Our other family and friends who attend, teach or work at MSU are safe. Not everyone can say that. Gutted.again.

dabbe My family's from Michigan, and so is my husband and his family. I was lucky enough to live on MSU's gorgeous campus during a summer while taking classes. So senseless and horrific. Thinking of you and your loved ones and all the people of MI today. 💔 1y

Today I marched with Students and Moms Demand Action in Washington DC to demand common sense gun laws. Tomorrow we call our senators and ask them to pass the Background Checks Expansion Act.

June was heavy on the nonfiction (9 of 13) for whatever reason. It wasn‘t planned, but I‘m not mad about it.

My only 5⭐️ was Fight Like a Mother because of what Shannon Watts and all the “Mothers and Others” have accomplished. The writing is decent, but the subject matter is close to my heart.

Pleasantly surprised to see my Moms Demand Action chapter lead, and newest friend, Kristi quoted in this book! Here, she is speaking about fighting a bill that would allow educators to carry concealed in Tennessee schools. This was 2018. It didn‘t pass. Moms showed up and made a difference. 🙌🏻 We fought it off again in 2019 🙌🏻, but it will no doubt show up again next year. #keepgoing

rretzler Oh, that scene looks so familiar. ⚽️ Done that many times! My 17yo son “retired” from soccer last year after many years of club soccer, but my 14yo is still going strong. He‘s on the Ohio South ODP State Pool (State team to be announced Friday) and HS summer lifting and training starts tomorrow. Last week were club tryouts - and we‘re still waiting to hear if his Futsal team will be training this summer! 5y

britt_brooke @rretzler It really is fun at these ages. I know it‘ll get more intense when they‘re old enough to have tryouts and all. As long as they‘re having fun and learning, we‘re happy. It‘s such a great sport for kids. Excellent exercise! 5y

Reviewsbylola I tried a bookstagram account for a few months too before I found Litsy. It wasn‘t my thing. I‘m not very artistic and I just feel like Litsy encourages more discussion. 5y

britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola Littens are my people. The Bookstagram crowd largely seems like they‘re more worried about likes and followers as if they‘re going to be Instagram famous (ha, yeah right), and narrating the most mundane stuff in their Instagram stories. And, ironically, not all that many book reviews. Litsy just feels more genuine. (edited) 5y

#bookmail | I predict both will be tough reads. The Bourdain one is really a coffee table type book. The Shannon Watts book is an important read for me because I recently joined my local Moms Demand Action group. Looking forward to learning more about her story.

Melissa_J I‘ll be curious for your thoughts on the Watts book. Living in a country that doesn‘t have major gun issues (we still have issues with guns, but no where near the magnitude of the problems in the US, even when factoring in population differences), I can‘t at all wrap my head around why gun control is such a hot button issue in the US. 5y

MelissaSue81 I thought Fight Like a Mother was Excellent. It wasn‘t a tough read for me necessarily.. parts were a little dry, but overall informative and inspiring. I actually re-contacted my local moms demand action the same day I finished it. 5y

britt_brooke @Melissa_J I wish I knew why exactly the US has so many issues. Watts‘s group‘s purpose is for common sense gun laws. Right now, my state (TN) just passed a bill that allows someone to carry concealed without any live training. It‘s been reduced to a 90 min online video and a quiz. It‘s crazy. That‘s just one issue. It‘s exhausting. 5y

MallenNC I don't think I'm ready for the Bourdain book yet, but I definitely want to read Fight Like a Mother. I read Parkland this year. I thought it was inspiring and not as hard to read as I expected. 5y

britt_brooke @MallenNC I‘m curious about Parkland and Columbine. Cullen seems amazing. But school shootings are a trigger and I haven‘t been able to do it. 😩 I think Fight Like a Mother will be a tough one, too. 5y

MallenNC @britt_brooke I have not read Columbine and I don't think I ever will. Parkland focused more on the activism of the students after, not the shooting. There were still sad parts but the focus was hopeful. 5y

Parts of this book were a little dry, and parts I didn‘t think were super useful (l don‘t really need to know how to brand an advocacy group..while I know it was important in her process.. I don‘t know that it would be for most people) but there are some really useful suggestions for getting involved as well as some great information on the successes of the gun reform movement. Good statistics on gun violence and also gun myths dispelled.
