Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City
Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City | K. J. Parker
K. J. Parker's new novel is the remarkable tale of the siege of a walled city, and the even more remarkable man who had to defend it. A siege is approaching, and the city has little time to prepare. The people have no food and no weapons, and the enemy has sworn to slaughter them all. To save the city will take a miracle, but what it has is Orhan. A colonel of engineers, Orhan has far more experience with bridge-building than battles, is a cheat and a liar, and has a serious problem with authority. He is, in other words, perfect for the job. Sixteen Ways To Defend a Walled City is the story of Orhan, son of Siyyah Doctus Felix Praeclarissimus, and his history of the Great Siege, written down so that the deeds and sufferings of great men may never be forgotten. EDIT - re-read - 🎧
Still a fun 5 star read. I‘ve been told that the descriptions of bridge building are excessive & it‘s slow. Ohh well, loved it. The prose is fluid, the dialog great. There‘s a lot of bridge talk so beware. Still a five star read! I‘ll read it again & I need to get book 2 for June!

Therefore, the whole thing had to be wishful thinking by some armchair theoretician, and the reports of trebuchets actually being used in sieges in the far eastern provinces of Echmen were just misinformation and fake news. There's no such thing as trebuchets; likewise dragons, elves and magic swords.

I plodded up onto the wall... I said, "Some fool's been spreading stupid rumours about-" One of my officers...pointed.

Oh, I thought.

'Take it away " I said to him in Alauzet-I knew he was from the Old Country by the colour of his hair. "I'm Orhan, colonel of the Engineers. And you could put an eye out with that thing."

He grinned and put it down. He'd heard of me, the only Alaz to have made good in the big city, I'm famous. Sold out is the term they generally use, but I'm sure they mean it kindly.

I read 28 books this month. These are my 9 favorite 5⭐️ reads … or darn close to FIVE!

It was a pretty varied reading month. A lot of great books!

🎧 “Don‘t you understand the hierarchy of command?”

Orhan: “No, I build bridges.”

What happens when an engineer becomes responsible for a city within besieged walls … no food or weapons … just Orhan who‘s a liar, a cheat, a snarky civilian who cannot be a citizen due to the color of his face & who loathes authority … left to defend the city after their army is decimated by the enemy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👇🏻

The book is told in the first person so you get to hear the internal monologue. This book was such a pleasant surprise. I didn‘t expect to like it. I loved this audiobook! #sharreadathon

Wow. Who knew! The story of a siege is hilarious, complex, with great characters and many laugh out loud comments from our intrepid protag.

#wyrdandwonder Day Two.
This book quickly became the comfort read I never expected. Orhan, an engineer and the possibly unreliable narrator of this story is the only person that can save the city from a siege. Too bad he doesn‘t really want to, but against his better judgement he gets involved and all the shenanigans ensue from there. Fast paced with snarky humor and a light tone, this is definitely one of my favorites from this past year.

imyril I've had this on my TBR for a while, I hadn't considered it as a possible comfort because hey siege/war/y'know - sounds like I should stop worrying and just read it :) 3y

The quality of this book is rather 😩

The print is a bit blurry and there are a lot of typos that could have been filtered out during editing.

TrishB You have to go with the mood! 3y
Leniverse I haven't finished it either. Although I do enjoy it! It's just more of an "a bit at a time" book. 3y

The army and the navy are away from the city when the invasion force shows up. Standing between them and the ruin of the city: an engineer, a liar, a crook, and a forger. These all happen to be the same man. Orhan, a milkface who cannot be a citizen in this land, rallies his corps of engineers to the defense. A fascinating look at a siege from the engineers who make all the defenses and the siege weapons, as well as wicked social satire.

I... Think I enjoyed this?! I found it very frustrating, though, at the end. Thinly veiled Roman/Byzantine Empire setting.

If you like the narration of Flashman, with the ingenuity of Mark Watney from “The Martian”, you‘ll enjoy this really fun book.
