Hannah calls it “A STATE OF BECOMING,” but most people would probably call it chaos. The floor and work spaces are littered with leaves, stems, and thorns that haven‘t made it into the giant wastebins by the tables.

This was such an amazing read. It really made you think think about the importance of the past, and what to do differently in the future. It also really makes you think about how things are viewed from another‘s perspective. I would strongly recommend reading this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Highlights the importance of social justice and the power of protest. As well as a really relatable story about being a teen navigating life, This Time Will Be Different also explores the historical and generational impact of the Japanese-American interment during World War II.

I picked this #botm last year because I thought it had an interesting storyline about Japanese internment camps and erasure of whites capitalizing on the internment business-wise.

Too bad that storyline was overshadowed by another YA love triangle M/F. 🙄 This is why I generally don‘t read YA. As an aro ace*, I wish romantic relationships weren‘t the end-all in YA. It is a huge frustration for me! There is also a lesbian love story as well, FYI.

Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks this is my actual #bookspin from my #backlist. At least it‘s done. 3y
Megabooks * I‘d like to say that it took a long time to admit that I don‘t want a romantic relationship. I feel that adult books are more interesting to me, in that I can find ones that show more focus on friendship or family without a lot of romance. Representation matters. I have two books on my shelves that are YA and have ace characters. I look forward to reading them when I can read smaller fonts again. (edited) 3y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! And even as someone who does embrace romance, I still feel like it's used way too heavily in YA. I wish there were more books about just life, friendships, and discovering new possibilities for hobbies and adventure, instead of every YA being about sexuality in some way, either experiencing it or defining it. 3y

Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks exactly! I realize that awakening desire to be in relationships is part of many teens‘ experience, but there is definitely room for a broader range of topics in contemporary YA novels. Or at least a few novels that don‘t involve love triangles. 🙄 (edited) 3y
KatieDid927 This is a major reason I don‘t like YA 3y
Amandajoy It‘s also important to teach young people that not everything in life is about having a romantic relationship. 3y
Megabooks @Amandajoy this is definitely true too. Great point. 3y

CJ has heard this motto her whole life “Katsuyamas never quit.” CJ helps her aunt at their flower shop Hearts Desire. When she found out the history behind the flower shop she is outraged. She didn‘t know that a local family cheat her family out of a lot of money when they were forced into an interment camp. CJ is determined to fight for a change. This book deals with a lot of important subjects such as racism, teen pregnancy, and LGBTQ equality.

"Look at these wildflowers. [...] They're not fancy, they're not prizewinning orchids or roses. But they don't care. They're just wildflowers, doing their thing, and they're beautiful. Be like them, sweet pea. Just be you and be happy." ?

I really enjoyed this! The story incorporates so many important topics, like racism or abortion, and it does so in a very organic, authentic (and in the case of the Japanese internment camps, educational) way.

CJ‘s family motto is Katsuyamas Never Quit. It‘s a lot to live up to when her mom is a high-achieving career climber and the only thing CJ feels she‘s good at is working at her aunt‘s flower shop. But CJ is about to bloom with her own brand of moxie. This book packs a lot of tough issues—racism, teen pregnancy, LGBTQ equality, and the dark legacy of the WWII Japanese-American concentration camps—while also being boldly optimistic and funny. 🖤

alysonimagines P.S. This was my POC fiction pick for July‘s #LitsyATXReadersSociety. 🦇📚 (edited) 5y

This book has restored my love for YA. CJ feels like she's a disappointment to her mom. She's low achieving because she hasn't found her passion. I'm trying to save her family's florist shop, she discovers something about the person her school is named after, and she starts a group to try to change the name. *There is a teen pregnancy and abortion scene (non-graphic)*

I love the discount but how I hate those freaking #Target stickers! They‘re impossible to peel off cleanly. And seriously, couldn‘t they at least stick them somewhere less intrusive?!?

Skyrimir I have a book with a target “sticker” that is literally printed on the cover. The worst for sure! 5y
Hestapleton I‘ve heard hair dryers are pretty good at getting them off! 5y
Factaddict73 I have used mayonnaise... just a teeny bit, used carefully and left a while. It works in from the edges, so I had to be patient, which is not one of my attributes. Now that I think about it, WD-40 might work, or GooGone. You‘d have to be patient, and of course, the old,”Try in a hidden area first to make sure there are no problems,” applies....I used a Q-tip to apply it when it worked, and played it out over a weekend. 5y
bookishbitch I use goo gone. It works well and has a citrus scent. 5y
UwannaPublishme Those cover stickers make me crazy too! Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is my go-to. 5y
