This book kind of had the vibe of a Tom Waits album from the perspective of an 11-year-old girl. The reader meets a ton of characters living on the edges of society. The tale is fast-paced and everyone is unique. I started to hope Baby would make it through relatively unscathed…and then the wheels fell off the bus. Her drug-addicted man-child father is drowning and his decisions and attempts to teach or punish his daughter throws her to the wolves

I read this as a suggestion from someone after reading Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart. Unlike Shuggie, which was a love story between a son and his broken mom, this novel was much sadder because almost none of the adults were reliable to the young protagonist Baby, a twelve year old girl who wants to stay a little girl in order to survive.

Lullabies for Little Criminals is a highly acclaimed Canadian book and one that I have been looking forward to reading for years. I really like O‘Neill‘s writing and I felt for the main character, Baby, but overall I wasn‘t that invested in the story and didn‘t enjoy it as much as I had expected. 2 ⭐️

Amazing read!

Been eying this on the shelf for a while now. Emerging front runner for next up.

This book was just a tragedy from beginning to the soul crushing middle and the end that implies everything will be fine but really leaves you with a deserted feeling. The end angered me for so many reasons.

This is one of those books that I have had on my TBR for years. I finally bought it, waited months to start it, got a quarter of the way through it than put it down. Now that I've also downloaded the audiobook, I've finished it in less than 24 hours. It was so good, and I'm sad that I waited so long to read it. Definitely recommend. ❤️

Started the physical book a few months ago. I got about 1/4 way thru, and ended up getting distracted by another book. Figured I'd start the audiobook tonight. I've really liked it so far, and can't wait to finally finish it. 👌

This is the second book I have read by Heather O'Neill & she never fails to amaze me with her writing, the power of her writing. Baby, the main character & narrator is unforgettable.

Appreciate gut wrenching story, but had to force myself to finish. Wasn't enjoying my reading time. Not bad writing, but maybe not the right book at the right time for me. Writing style was as if I was staring at a pretty pair of shoes, encrusted with actual star dust, catching the light of a thousand rainbows, but when I put my feet into them, they were the complete wrong size & shape. Painfully forced simile? Yeah. About five of those per page.

Apparently angels stomp on stairs. Didn't you know? I'm so tired of the lame similes. I need to be done with this book. Every time it sucks me back in, one of these stinkers drops. Ugh

Stuck in bed with the flu for three days so far, and I can now finally hold a book... and laughing hurts. Still, the best insult a kid can say is "your mother is a whore." Lmao.

Baby's story is heartbreaking, raw and at times terrifically hard to read, but her voice is unforgettable and authentic. A book that could easily run off the rails, but holds together for a wild ride. Note: trigger warnings for child abuse and prostitution.
