⭐⭐⭐⭐

With a wide array of diverse, predominantly LGBTQIA stories, this anthology offered a variety of modern visions of our nation and its future.

Many were innovative and richly imaginative while still carrying a somber quality to them; some were sadly forgettable.

Overall, as someone who greatly enjoys speculative fiction, I wish I could've seen more currents of hope running through their core.

My January #BookSpinBingo card 😊

#BookSpin selection is a wild card for any YA title of my choosing (I've got three different ones I'm looking at atm) and #DoubleSpin is the tagged title.

My January #DoubleSpin selection (tagged title) is a carry over from last year and I am more than 3/4-ers of the way through that one. Anthologies DO take me a minute ?

#BookSpin is a wild card, so I've given myself three titles to choose from, one of which, "Pet" by Akwaeke Emezi, was an entry on a previous Spin list that I didn't get around to completing ?

Cheers to a better year of reading! ????

Bkwrm7 Ooh - I've heard great things about Felix Ever After. I would have a hard time choosing between that and Pet! 3y
Librariana @Bkwrm7 - I'm not gonna lie... I really wish I was an octopus about 87% of the time because holding up that many books all at once, and being able to read a bit from each one, sounds dreamy 🥰 Luckily, I've got more wild card slots available and can substitute one of these for that! 3y
Librariana @Bkwrm7 - Ok... so I just checked really quick... I've only got one other YA spot available 😫😩 NNOOOOOO 😭 3y

Bkwrm7 Octopus reading potential sounds awesome. I would also like that. :) 2 out of 3 isn't too bad - and there's always February, right? 3y

ChasingOm I read FELIX EVER AFTER last month and ❤️❤️❤️d it. PET is still on my TBR. 3y

Rainy Sunday morning reading with my favorite kiddo. I love how he always ends up sitting in/on a pile of books like he‘s a tiny book-hoarding dragon. I also really love this book!!

This book is clearly intended for those that sit on the far-left of the political spectrum. I just couldn‘t. I know it‘s speculative fiction, but it was too extreme for me. There was zero feeling of hope after this read.

TheAromaofBooks It's always frustrating when you have to wade through pages of why hamburger-eating conservatives destroyed the world as we know it :-p 5y
lauren.lerner Speculative fiction is inherently progressive, that‘s the purpose of the genre: to explore how we progress past where we are now or where we might be in the near future. Sounds like this isn‘t the genre for you, though it‘s a shame you hated every story in the book because there are some truly lovely gems in it. 4y

Absolutely loved this collection: it's timely, thoughtful, and full of creative thinking. I was hooked from the very first story, about a bookstore that straddles the line between a literally divided America, and the owner who tries to coexist between the two sides.

QuintusMarcus I was not surprised by stories that revolved around survival of political or environmental catastrophe: what did surprise me was the number of stories that imagined a future of brutal hostility to those of non-conforming genders or lifestyles. Excellent collection of stories, highly recommended! 5y

This collection of speculative fiction offers a vivid window into the present fears and insecurities of marginalized people in the United States. The stories have great range from hilarious to disturbing, fantastical to realistic. Every one is very relevant and will have remain evocative for a long time.

Appreciating that this anthology is read by multiple readers via Libro.fm. About five stories in, and they‘ve all been stellar.

Today and everyday I‘m thankful for indie bookstores! Though I end up at Books Are Magic 3-4 times per month, there weren‘t any events I‘d planned on going to for 2 more weeks and I refused to let these beautiful mugs sell out before I got one— so I splurged on shipping plus these 2 cool paperbacks. Oops 🙂🙃🙂🙃 #bookhaul
