Agata sudava e le bruciavano gli occhi, come se vi fossero entrati i granelli di sabbia di un vento di scirocco che scendeva dalle lanterne sul soffitto e lavvolgeva immobilizzandola. In quel momento e per la prima volta Agata percep, come se fosse corporea, laltera solitudine della clausura. Messina, 15 agosto 1839. In casa del maresciallo don Peppino Padellani di Opiri fervono i preparativi per la festa dellAssunzione della Vergine. Agata tredicenne figlia del maresciallo innamorata del ricco Giacomo Lepre, ma, bench ricambiata, costretta a rinunciare al suo amore: la nobilt della famiglia non basta a compensare il dissesto economico. Alla morte del maresciallo, la madre la porta con s a Napoli e la forza a entrare in convento. Nel monastero benedettino di San Giorgio Stilita si intrecciano amori, odi, rancori, gelosie, passioni illecite e vendette. Eppure Agata, dopo lo scoramento iniziale, si appassiona allo studio e alla coltivazione delle erbe medicinali, impara a fare il pane e i dolci, e, confortata dalla rigida scansione della giornata monastica, legge i libri che il giovane capitano James Garson (incontrato sul piroscafo che lha condotta a Napoli) le manda con regolarit. Agata ha accettato la vita del chiostro, ma il desiderio di vivere nel mondo non lha abbandonata ed incuriosita dalle sorti dei movimenti che aspirano allUnit dItalia. La contraddizione si fa sempre pi netta, anche se i sentimenti verso Giacomo cominciano a sbiadire e cresce lattrazione nei confronti di James, presenza costante bench sottotraccia nella sua vita. Quanto pi si inasprisce il conflitto interiore, tanto pi il futuro si colma di orizzonte e di speranza. Sorella mediterranea delle eroine di Jane Austen, che infatti legge appassionatamente, lAgata di Simonetta Agnello Hornby porta in s una forza spirituale nuova, modernissima. Una forza, una determinazione di giovane donna fedele a se stessa e ai propri sentimenti da leggere a partire dal nostro tempo per arrivare al suo.

I ended up enjoying our April #NunLitQuarterly pick quite a bit. Rich in historical detail. Lots of inner turmoil for our young heroine. A good deal of drama yet filled with quiet, reflective moments. I think it was meant to be a happy ending, but I was left feeling concerned about how things might play out—hopefully just lots of romance and reading.

“She opened the package—it was another novel, The Monk. The title made her smile…She leafed through it, as she always did. Every book has its own identity and characteristics, and Agata had a ritual that she followed in order to get to know and love a book…and only then did she pick up the paper knife. She put the little uneven tabs of paper that ripped off as she cut the pages into her mouth, as if they were communion wafers.”
