This beloved Caldecott Award winning book discusses friendship, bravery, overcoming worry and fear, ingenuity, and team work. A strategy that could go hand and hand with incorporating all these themes would be DR, as students get the opportunity to get up out of their seats and translate the words they are reading as a class through movement and expression.

AlexRobinson A resource to help explain the importance of DR in a classroom as well as some tips and tricks can be found here: https://www.ericdigests.org/2004-1/drama.htm. UDL connecting guidelines could be: 4.1, 5.2, and 8.3 (vary the methods for response and navigation, use multiple tools for construction and composition, and foster collaboration and community). 3y
AlexRobinson EL strategies to go along with this are: 4, 16, 17, 18, and 21 (link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge, integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities, provide contextual support through audio, visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expression, and record your lectures, presentations, or stories- especially for new students who have very limited exposure to English). 3y
AlexRobinson Students love this read, and making it interactive takes comprehension and fun that much deeper! #ucflae3414sp21 EDIT: (While reviewing my post a few days later I realized I missed stating this was a MF😊) (edited) 3y

Swimmy is a TL picture book about a little black fish named Swimmy who comes from a school of red fish. After a big tuna came and swallowed all of the red fish, Swimmy is alone in the big beautiful ocean, until he comes across another school of fish and teaches them a valuable lesson. Swimmy is a Caldecott Honor book and would be fun to use for S in the classroom. I chose UDL principle 8.3 about fostering collaboration and community sine that is..

deiacovab ..exactly what Swimmy does in the story. I also chose ESOL principle 24: Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum. I found a Spanish version of this book and it would be interesting to compare with students key words in the English version to the Spanish version and allow EL students to work with other students on pronunciation. An example would be 'Nadarin' to 'Swimmy'. . #ucflae3414sp20 4y
deiacovab I found a resource that can be used for multiple Leo Lionni books https://images.randomhouse.com/promo_image/9780399555503_4216.pdf that discusses themes found in his books. This F Caldecott Honor Book, ALA Notable Children‘s Book and New York Times Best Illustrated Book by beloved Leo Leonni, would be great for an AS. This book follows the adventure of a little black fish named Swimmy, who overcomes all fears and danger, and shows his friends how when you work together you can overcome anything.

RossoS This website http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/building-matrix-l... takes you to an AS lesson that explores four books by Leo Leonni, including Swimmy. Swimmy, by Leo Lionni tells the story of Swimmy, the only black fish in his family of red fish. One day, a tuna fish came by and ate all the red fish with only Swimmy to escape. Swimmy was sad, scared, and and lonely as he searched the sea. The sights of the ocean like the medusa made of rainbow jelly, the lobster that walked about like a water moving machine, and a forest of seaweeds growing from sugar candy rocks, made Swimmy happy again.

ChelseaPerez He finally came across a school of little red fish just like his own. He wanted to share the amazing ocean with them, but they were too afraid of the big fish who could eat them. However, Swimmy had to find away. He taught the fish to swim together to make an even bigger fish to scare the big fish away. Swimmy was the black eye and with his new friends they chased the big fish far away. 6y
