Death in Provence
Death in Provence: A Novel | Serena Kent
10 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
The first entry in a clever, lighthearted mystery series set in modern Provencea delightful blend of Agatha Christie and Peter Maylefeaturing the irrepressible Penelope Kite, a young-at-heart divorcee with a knack for stumbling across dead bodies. Its love at first sight when Penelope Kite sees Le Chant dEauThe Song of Waterthe stone farmhouse tucked high in the hills above the Luberon valley, complete with a garden, swimming pool, and sweeping mountain vistas. For years, Penelope put her unfaithful ex-husband and her ungrateful stepchildren first. Since taking early retirement from her job in forensics at the Home Office in England, shes been an unpaid babysitter and chauffeur for her grandchildren. Now, shes going to start living for herself. Though her dream house needs major renovations, Penelope impulsively buys the property and moves to St. Merlot. But Penelopes daydreams of an adventurous life in Provence didnt include finding a corpse floating face down in her swimming pool. The discovery of the dead man plunges her headlong into a Provenal stew of intrigue and lingering resentments simmering beneath the deceptively sunny village. Having worked in the forensics office, Penelope knows a thing or two about murder investigations. To find answers, she must carefully navigate between her seemingly ubiquitous, supercilious (and enviously chic) estate agent, the disdainful chief of police, and the devilishly handsome mayoreven as she finds herself tempted by all the delicacies the region has to offer. Thank goodness her old friend Frankie is just a flight away . . . and that Penelope is not quite as nave as her new neighbors in St. Merlot believe. Set against the exquisite backdrop of Provence, steeped in history, atmosphere, and secrets, Death in Provence introduces an irresistible heroine and a delightful new mystery series.

A cozy mystery set in the south of France. Sometimes it seemed a bit bulky, but all in all I enjoyed the setting.

I‘m buying a lottery ticket so I can buy a stone farm house in Provence. Penelope Kite has taken early retirement after a messy divorce , starting up her new life as a British Expat in France. Of course this is a murder mystery - dead bodies start turning up and Penny is entangled in the mystery. I enjoyed the characters in the little French village. The food! The scenery! 👍👍

batsy This sounds delightful! 5y

I couldn‘t resist going to day two of the book sale. Took the bus so had to limit my haul. I did find a few #blameitonLitsy

merelybookish Nice! I'm especially intrigued by the I Hate To Cook Cookbook! (Because I do too!!) 5y
Dragon Thanks @merelybookish it‘s a better copy than my current one. My elderly friend used to make recipes from it. It‘s copyrighted 1960. I still make Dr. Martin ‘s Mix. A ground meat and rice dish. 5y
Melissa_J You‘ve done well at this book sale 😊 5y
Dragon Thanks @Melissa_J it was a great book buying experience! I love the search through the tables looking for my lucky finds. 👍😀🐉 5y

“Her dream house in Provence. The cicadas, the annoying wasps. If only she had known what lay in store.” ... and a dead body floating in her pool.

Ex Pat Penelope helps solve the mystery of dead bodies in her yard and bullets always flying by her as the new owner of a cozy cottage in Provence. Lots of lavender, rose, delicious food, and charming villages make this mystery a fun one for those who love Provence or that dream of visiting.
